The Philadelphia Eagles have signed wide receiver Alshon Jeffery to a four-year 52 million dollar contract (27m guaranteed) through 2021. This past offseason the Eagles signed Jeffery to a one-year, 14 million dollar contract as an attempt to bolster Carson Wentz’s weapons. This one-year contract also was a way for him to prove his skills and to be set in line to get a large payday in the coming year which he achieved.
The 6’3″ 214lb wideout gave the birds some much-needed size and star power that they lacked at the position last year. Jeffery is 27 years old and is in his sixth year in the league. Over his career, he has amassed 347 receptions, 5,168 yards, and 33 touchdowns. He also received a pro bowl selection after the 2013 season when he gained over 1,400 yards and 7 touchdowns. This year he has 43 catches 619 yards and 7 touchdowns. Jeffery’s numbers aren’t as high as some other “elite” wideouts in the league. This is only because Wentz and the Eagles’ offense does a nice job at spreading the ball around. Despite the lack of stats, Jeffery has made the big plays when needed of him.
With this move, the Eagles have made sure that they will have that big target for Wentz’s to throw to for at least the next four years. Now the Eagles will still need to find some more star power in the offseason but the Eagles have the best record in the NFL right now and locking up Jeffery is one way to continue down this path of success. With the Birds locking down a weapon like Jeffery for Wentz we can only imagine how much he is going to continue to develop.
