2018 Raiders Draft Prospect
Name: Ronald Jones
Position: RB
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 200 lbs.
Team Fit
Ronald Jones does not have the hype as some of the other prospects. However, he could immediately step in as the favorite to lead the Raiders rushing attack. Jones possesses the size and has the frame to add mass going into the pros. He is fast for his size and can run between the tackles.
His pass protection improved each year he was at USC. His quiet demeanor has not made him a known commodity like some others. As a result, he flies under the radar. His ability to cut and get vertical remains top-notch. When daylight appears, he hits a second gear that leaves defenders in the dust. The Raiders seek a Marshawn Lynch replacement and Jones could be the key to the Raiders rushing attack, if he falls to them after the first round.
Stats
Running style
Jones profiles as a speed back more than anything. Yet, he transitioned to more of a power runner during his years at USC. He cuts well and break huge runs with his speed. Jones fits the modern mold of running back that can do it all Jones could serve as a three-down back in the NFL. Also, he brings a quiet toughness..
Agility
Jones makes the first defender miss. Even if he adds mass in the pros, he should not lose any ability to make cuts. Under those consequences, his carries will increase, due to the weight.
Speed
If there is one aspect of Jones’ game that will not be questioned when the draft comes, it will be his speed. In college, he averaged 6.1 yards per carry. He gained 1,000 yards rushing twice in his three years.
Hands
During every year from his sophomore year, his receptions and receiving yards increased. In the NFL, he will probably start as a third down back before moving into a feature role. Currently, scouts compare him to Vikings’ runner Dalvin Cook with his rushing ability. In addition, they also cite Saints’ back Alvin Kamara for his speed and agility. Currently, he fits more of the Kamara mold. Yet, with his size, strength, and speed, he can transition into more of a David Johnson type back that can be used as a workhorse who can make catches out of the backfield.
