Baltimore Raven’s breakout rookie cornerback Marlon Humphrey was charged with third-degree robbery for allegedly stealing a 15 dollar phone charger from his Uber driver. For any wondering, if you read that right, yes Humphrey was arrested for taking a 15 dollar phone charger!
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s police report states that Humphrey asked to borrow the driver’s phone charger, but when the driver asked for it back Humphrey elbowed the driver when he tried to recover his stolen items, while Humphrey damaged additional property while balling up his fists and implying he wanted to fight. Humphrey was also suspected to be under the influence at the time of the incident.
The Ravens have kept their comments about the case brief but this is their official statement as of now ““Marlon told us that it was a misunderstanding regarding a $15 telephone charger, which he thought was his. Our understanding is that he has been interviewed by University of Alabama Police and is cooperating.” The Ravens also stated that Humphrey contacted them and said that the event was just a misunderstanding.
Humphrey’s lawyer Paul Patterson weighed in on the matter on Thursday saying that Humphrey “has 11 million reasons why not to steal a $15 cord”, and regarding the future for Marlon after the case Patterson said “The future looks bright for Marlon in this incident, and I would hope to have this matter resolved in the next few months.”
Though stealing is certainly never good, I believe getting jailed over a phone charger is a little severe considering many of you reading this have accidentally taken a family member or friends phone charger by accident.
Considering what Humphrey’s lawyer said and the severity of the case it seems that Humphrey will be let off in the coming months, and this should not affect Humphrey football career, but his off-field reputation could be permanently harmed.
