When a college player declares for the NFL draft, they have very little say in which team selects them. Sometimes the player doesn’t mesh well with the team that drafts them. However, other times the fit between a player and team is so perfect, that it seems too good to be true. That was the case when Connor Williams was selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the 50th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
In the days leading up to the draft, there were numerous reports that the Cowboys had pegged their second-round pick as a trade chip to go get All-Pro safety Earl Thomas from the Seattle Seahawks. I believe that was Dallas’ plan, but that all changed when a player fell to them that was such a perfect fit that they couldn’t pass him up.
Connor Williams grew up in Coppell, Texas only thirty minutes from AT&T stadium. He grew up cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and dreaming that one day he could wear the star on the side of his helmet. As much as Connor Williams wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy, the Dallas Cowboys needed Connor Williams even more.
Connor Williams is a 6’6, 315-pound beast, with a nasty mean streak. He won the starting left tackle job at the University of Texas as a true Freshman. As a sophomore, he was a consensus All-American. This past season as a junior, he suffered a knee injury that would sideline him for seven games. When healthy he was considered one of the best offensive linemen in the country.
The Dallas Cowboys had four Pro-Bowl caliber players along their offensive line, but in order to be the team they want to be they needed a fifth. That’s why when they saw Williams still on the board at pick 50, they scrapped their plan to get Earl Thomas and instead drafted a player that fits perfectly with how Dallas wants to win football games in 2018. In 2016 Dallas pounded opposing defenses into submission by running Ezekiel Elliott behind the best offensive line in football. The Cowboys hope to duplicate that blueprint in 2018 and with the addition of Connor Willams, they quite possibly will do just that.
