With rumors flying, speculation, hot takes, and hearsay run wild as well. By that standard, the Raiders signing veteran defensive lineman touched off the Offseason Outrage Meter. Largely, the fanbase usually waits until training camp to show concern. Yet, the furor surrounding Khalil Mack’s contract situation unnerved some within RaiderNation. With that said, here are reasons to not worry
Rucker and Rubin Are Not Replacements
If you watched the NFL, the names Frostee Rucker and Ahtyba Rubin should ring a bell. Both veterans toiled on the line for multiple teams. In addition, they share a common quality: run stuffing. During the Norton Era, only Khalil Mack showed any run-stopping ability from an end spot. Conversely, the Raiders lacked a stout interior to thwart the run consistently.
With Rucker and Rubin on the roster, Oakland has depth. If these two can push the younger players, great. However, if they actually win jobs, those young players do not appear that strong. In effect, Rucker and Rubin serve as sparring partners and mentors for the young players. More importantly, they send a clear message, draft status or not, jobs appear up for grabs. In effect, they are a 600-pound alarm.
Mack Gets Richer
Do not allow veteran signings distract from Khalil Mack and his future contract. Whether the ink dries next week or next month, the generational defender will sign a monster deal. Without hesitation, Mack will embrace playing with the Raiders for the rest of his career. In negotiation, each side will extend an initial offer. Then, a counter offer and off they go.
By the time of Week One’s kickoff, Oakland will extend Mack for the next half-decade or so. His contract will feature a massive signing bonus. All of the speculating of whether Mack remains with the Raiders feels premature, wrongheaded, and weird.
Today is June 12. No fan should be concerned about Khalil Mack, Frostee Rucker, or Ahyba Rubin. With preseason still six or so weeks away, the pressure to generate hype never ceases. If you do not remember anything else, know these facts.
- Reggie McKenzie picked Khalil Mack and watched him evolve in a cornerstone end.
- Khalil Mack represents a daring move that paid dividends for a GM with spotty first round history.
In essence, the Raiders will enjoy Khalil Mack for the near future.
