New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins took to Instagram to express “regret and sadness” over the death of his friend Roosevelt Rene at his Fair Lawn, N.J. home last month.
Jenkins confirmed in Thursday’s post that he and Rene (a.k.a. Tripps Beatz) were collaborating on a music project. He referred to Rene as a “good friend”.
“It hurts my heart to know he has passed away,” the statement read.
Rene’s body was found in Jenkins’ basement June 25. Jenkins wasn’t at home, having departed for his native Florida immediately after the conclusion of the Giants’ three-day minicamp nine days before the discovery of the body.
Police have charged Jenkins’ older brother, William Jenkins Jr., with aggravated manslaughter. The older Jenkins was arrested on a parole violation for a previous drug conviction in Ontario County, N.Y. after reports of a suspicious person. He was questioned and subsequently arrested for Rene’s death.
New York State Police said that William Jenkins Jr. admitted to waiting to buy gas for more than two hours at an Express Mart despite not having a valid drivers’ license in New York or New Jersey. Investigators believe that Rene, 25, died as a result of a fight with William Jenkins Jr.
The Giants cornerback confirmed via Instagram that he was in Florida doing a promotional tour for his Jackrabbit Tour 2. He didn’t mention his brother in the post, saying he was unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation.
