The Seattle Seahawks’ mandatory mini-camp ended on May 6th. Since then, Seattle’s players and coaches have had six weeks to get ready for the upcoming grind of what constitutes a NFL season. Beginning in July with training camp and culminating with the Super Bowl in February, the NFL calendar is chock full of important benchmarks. We’ll take a look at the upcoming key dates for the Seahawks leading up to the start of the regular season.
Training Camp begins July 26th:
The Seahawks’ training camp will go from July 26th to August 16th and will be held at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC) in Renton, WA. Twelve practice sessions will be open to the public with one open practice exclusive to season-ticket holders. All but three of the training camp practices will start at 10 a.m. The Aug. 6th and 15th practices will start at 11 a.m. with the August 4th practice beginning at 1 p.m. Unfortunately, all registration for the open practices has closed.
Some of the top Seahawks’ training camp battles to focus on will be at running back, wide receiver and tight end.
August 7th — Deadline for players under contract to report to their clubs to earn an accrued season for free agency:
This is a key date to watch regarding the potential holdout by Earl Thomas. If Thomas doesn’t report by this date, the year will not count as an accrued season when it comes to future contract considerations. This alone won’t be enough to end Earl’s hold-out, but may be an additional consideration for the All-Pro Safety.
Preseason Games Start August 9th:
Thursday, August 9th vs. the Indianapolis Colts, 7 p.m.
Saturday, August 18th at the Los Angeles Chargers, 7 p.m.
Friday, August 24 at the Minnesota Vikings, 5 p.m.
Thursday, August 30 vs. the Oakland Raiders, 7 p.m.
September 1st — Clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 53 players on the Active/Inactive List:
In 2017, the NFL eliminated the roster cutdown to 75 players during the preseason, instead opting to have a one-time reduction before the regular season begins. The Seahawks will have to release 37 players from their 90-man preseason roster.
September 2nd — Clubs may establish a Practice Squad of 10 players:
After all players throughout the league have been notified of their release, Seattle may start claiming / signing players to their Practice Squad.
September 6th, 9th and 10th- The NFL Regular Season begins:
The Seahawks open their regular season on September 9th in Denver against the Broncos.
