Having the future Hall of Famer will bolster Redskins defense and playoff opportunity

When the Redskins drafted Preston Smith in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft, they couldn’t have expected this.  In Smith’s three years in the NFL, two as a starter, he has totaled 115 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions and 10 passes defended.  Being opposite Ryan Kerrigan has allowed him to develop into a borderline Pro-Bowl caliber linebacker.

While Preston has become a fan favorite, if there is an opportunity to trade for a future Hall of Famer, you need to take your shot.  That is not an indictment on the player Smith has become.  Rather it is a statement on what you could end up getting in return for him.

The Redskins should kick the tires to trade for Khalil Mack.  The organization has the connections with the Raiders.  So, it would not hurt to see what it would take to add an All-Pro to your defense.  At minimum, they would need to depart with a high draft pick or two.  Maybe a first rounder, but you could potentially get away with trading away a second or a couple of thirds if there is a player of value in the deal.

This is where Preston Smith comes in

Preston will be a free agent at the end of the year.  There has not been any indication that the Redskins and his agent have started contract negotiations.  If Smith ends up not returning, you will have a hole that would need to be filled immediately.  Ryan Anderson is a potential fix, but there is no guarantee he will take a major step forward.

Smith has also been evaluated around the league as a better fit for a 4-3 base defense which the Raiders are switching to.  Khalil Mack is better suited for 3-4 base defense which the Redskins run.  The defensive schematics make perfect sense.

However, for the Redskins to do this trade, they would need to have the approval from the Raiders to negotiate a long-term deal.  There is no way the Redskins should give up that much for a one-year rental.  Even for an All-Pro.

The addition of Mack would solidify the edge for the Redskins for years to come.  This will force coaches to have to choose who they want to focus their game plan around, Ryan Kerrigan or Khalil Mack?  Mack’s acquisition could also help cover up any deficiencies that might appear in the secondary throughout the year.

Having two future Hall of Famer’s flying around the field would turn the Redskins from a top-15 to a top-10 defense.  A top-10 defense means a more realistic push at the division and a wild card spot this year.

A trade for Khalil Mack is a trade to make the Redskins defense great again!
