Welcome to Week Three of the NFL Preseason, otherwise known as “dress rehearsal” week of the preseason. Starters will play into the second half, and fans can get an idea of what they will see during the upcoming regular season. The Patriots have struggled to score against the Panthers, and they’ve always struggled with running quarterbacks, so tonight’s game is a good way to gauge where they are at. Please stay with us as we provide opinionated updates throughout the game.

:FIRST QUARTER

15:00- Carolina starts with the ball; good chance to see the Patriots starting defense against some unconventional weapons.

14:14- 1st down completion for the Panthers on 3rd & 5.

13:13- Two-yard run by McCaffrey, 2nd & 8…

12:52- Devin Funchess was wide open for a 25 yard completion, but it was negated by a hands to the face penalty at the LOS. 2nd & 18…

12:24- Lawrence Guy misses the tackle on a screen, and McCaffrey takes it for nine. 3rd & 9…

12:00- Newton runs for 11, 1st & 10, Panthers…Newton hurt his head & neck on the play.

10:51- McCaffrey easily runs for 17 yards on an off-tackle run. Too easy. 1st & 10…

9:10- McCourty was just flagged on an incidental contact play. The refs need preseason too. Wow, what a TERRIBLE call. The NFL rule enforcement system as a whole is broken.

8:53- Funchess picks up six on the catch, 2nd & 4…

8:19- McCaffrey runs for two, Carolina at the Patriots four-yard line. 3rd & 1…

6:53- Carolina barely picks up the 1st down. 1st & Goal…

6:30- Lawrence Guy blows up the play, loss of one. 2nd & Goal…false start, Panthers. Back ’em up. 2nd & Goal from the Patriots seven…

5:48- McCaffrey is wrapped up by Wise after a gain of three, 3rd & Goal…

5:04- Stephon Gilmore with the nice breakup at the goal line, and the Panthers will attempt the field goal. Carolina only scored three, but they ate 10 minutes off the clock. Yes, it is good that the Patriots kept them out of the end zone, 1/6 of this game has been played before the Patriots offense took the field. That isn’t good. Panthers 3, Patriots 0

4:56- Brady and the offense finally take the field.

4:52- Dorsett for seven, 2nd & 3, Patriots…

4:20- Pass intended for Rob Gronkowski knocked down at the LOS, 3rd & 3…

3:50- Three-&-out after the two-yard gain by White; the Patriots threw the ball three times, zero rush attempts. Call me crazy, but you would think that giving the defense a little rest might help. Carolina plays the style that the Patriots struggle with, and it is already on full display tonight.

3:25- Funchess with a back-shoulder catch on a perfectly thrown ball. Great throw, 1st & 10, Panthers…

2:44- Samuel burns Gilmore for 20; he has struggled, but he’ll be fine. 1st & 10…

2:20- Eric Rowe looked beat, but he baited Newton and broke up the pass easily. Nice play. 2nd & 18…

1:19- Good pressure, but Newton escaped for a gain of 10, but that isn’t enough. The Panthers went for the field goal, which was good, and extend their lead to six. Panthers 6, Patriots 0

:50- Touchback, and the Patriots will take over at their own 25.

:38- Seven-yard run by Hill, who has been impressive. 2nd & 3…

:03- Gillislee with a gain of 12 on the run, 1st & 10, Patriots. Funny, when you run the ball with a good offensive line, it allows you to gain yards and eat some clock. Novel concept. That’s the end of the 1st quarter, a quarter that was dominated by the Carolina Panthers. Panthers 6, Patriots 0

SECOND QUARTER

13:42- Bunch formation screen to Edelman, and he takes it for the 1st down. Well designed, good blocking. 1st & 10…

13:06- Dorsett with a nice catch for 16, and then he gets cheapshoted when he is out of bounds, leading to 15 more. 1st & 10, Patriots.

12:30- Wow, Patterson has next level speed AND quickness. This offense is a good fit for him- catch the short stuff and let him pick up YAC. 1st & 10…

11:10- Hill gets blown up for a loss of two; somebody messed that play up, big time. 3rd & 7…

10:40- Hogan with a gain of 10, 1st & Goal, Patriots…

9:55- Waddle called for a 15-yard penalty; dumb penalty, you just can’t do that. I understand protecting your teammate, but that can’t happen in the red zone. He probably just cost them four points.

9:26- Bolden takes the screen for six, Patriots now at the Carolina 13…

8:43- Neutral zone infraction give the Patriots five yards; 3rd & Goal from the Panthers eight…

8:33- 27-yard field goal by Gostkowski cuts the Panthers lead in half; Panthers 6, Patriots 3

8:05- McCaffrey runs for two before being wrapped up by stud rookie linebacker Ju’Whaun Bentley. 3rd & 3…

7:13- Harmon breaks up the pass, and the Patriots will start their offensive series at their own 29 after the fair catch by McCarron.

7:02- Bad throw on the slant, or the wrong route by Patterson. My guess is it was option two. 2nd & 10…

6:40- Edelman for eight, 3rd & 2…

6:17- Edelman with a gain of eight more, 1st down…

5:30- Drop by Edelman; 3rd & 12…

5:20- James White picks up 15 after slipping out into the flat; he’s their best weapon besides Gronk. 1st & 10…

4:45- Dorsett makes a nice play, gaining seven; 2nd & 3…

4:14- Gillislee gets bottled up in the backfield, 3rd & 3…

3:32- Edelman with another drop; Patriots are going for it on 4th & 3…

3:26- Dorsett with another nice play; it looks like he is starting to build trust with Brady. 1st & 10…

2:44- Gillislee loses two on the play, 3rd & 5…

2:00- Brady doesn’t get the snap off, and we have reached the two-minute warning. VERY big for the Patriots to have Brady & Dorsett on the same page. Dorsett has talent, Brady can help him reach his potential.

1:58- Fade-route to Tye….but WHY?? Terrible play. To add insult to injury, Gostkowski missed the field goal. It was 3rd & 5, why throw that fade? The Panthers remain in the lead. Panthers 6, Patriots 3

:50- Olsen makes the catch at the 50, and the Panthers are trying score before the half.

:16- Olsen makes another catch and runs to the 15; the Panthers used their final timeout, so they need to score a touchdown now

:01- This is awful. Olsen catches it and slides out of bounds, yet the clock never stops. Newton made a good play to get the ball snapped and spiked, and they connect on the field goal to extend the lead to six. I fully expect the Patriots to be great, and I also think they will be in the Super Bowl. For their sake, they better hope Carolina isn’t their. Panthers 9, Patriots 3

HALFTIME

15:00- Cyrus Jones looked good on the return (his jersey was destroyed in the process), but the offsetting penalties cost the Patriots about 20 yards. Brian Hoyer takes over for Tom Brady.

14:40- Patterson with a gain of 12; 1st & 10, Patriots…

14:15- Incomplete pass on 2nd down; it looked like a throwaway…I hope it was.

14:03- Bolden gains three on the screen, 3rd & 7…

13:36- Decker is called for illegal motion, 3rd & 12…

13:00- Decker beat his man, but Hoyer made a terrible throw. Decker caught it, but he was out of bounds. 4th down, and the Patriots are forced to punt.

11:45- Big play for Carolina, and they are now at the Patriots three. 1st & Goal…

10:32- Two run stuffs in a row, the second being by on-the-bubble Jason MacCourty. 3rd & Goal…

9:09- Touchdown, Panthers. Lee was there and should have made the play, but he simply couldn’t. The Panthers are dominating this game. Panthers 15, Patriots 3

9:03- Jones with a decent return; Hoyer will try to start the comeback.

8:59- Gain of four, 2nd & 6…

8:23- Patterson with a gain of five, 3rd & 1…

7:52- The offensive line has struggled at times tonight, and they did on that last 3rd and short.

7:02- Big punt return for the Panthers; this has not been a productive night for New England.

6:54- 1st down after the gain of 12, Panthers on the Patriots 46…

6:12- Gain of two on the run, 2nd & 8…

5:24- JC Jackson with a great play defending the screen pass; 3rd & 10…

4:55- Butler called for roughing the passer; it looked like he was pushed into him, but they’ll call that every time.

4:45- Run play is stuffed, 2nd & 10…

4:05- Screen pass shut down again after a gain of just two yards; 3rd & 8…

3:28- Incomplete pass into the end zone, and the Panthers are forced to settle for three. Panthers 18, Patriots 3

2:41- Gain of zero on the screen pass; 3rd & 12, Patriots…

1:58- Poggi (fullback) fumbled the ball after picking up the first down on the catch. Another touchdown and this game is probably over.

:42- Grisson makes the tackle, 3rd & 7 for the Panthers…

:36- Frazier with the 1st down catch; Cyrus Jones in coverage. 1st & 10, Panthers…

:00- That is the end of the third quarter; this game has been completely dominated by the Carolina Panthers. Panthers 18, Patriots 3

FOURTH QUARTER

15:00- Crossen with a nice breakup, 2nd & 10 from the Panthers 12…

14:11- Touchdown, Panthers. This just keeps getting worse. Frazier was wide open on the play. This is not a very impressive dress rehearsal for the Patriots tonight.

14:00- Decker with the out-route catch for the 1st down; 1st & 10…

13:16- 20-yard catch by McCarron for another 1st down…

11:42- Gostkowski comes in and drills a 52-yard field goal, which isn’t going to do a lot to help win the game, but it helps his confidence after the miss earlier in the game. Panthers 25, Patriots 6

11:02- Gain of one for the Panthers on the run; 2nd & 9…

10:119- Wiltz with the tackle after a gain of five…

9:42- Duke with a gain of 15; Richards in coverage (he should be cut.)

8:21- Struggling to focus over here during this preseason blowout. Sorry.

7:00- Crossen with another PBU; after stinking up the place last week, he has stepped up. Good for him, he’s a great athlete and seems like a good kid. 3rd & 10…

6:32- Riley McCarron with a gain of 20 on the play, 1st & 10…

3:53- The Patriots are driving; 4 yard run by Gillislee, 1st & 10…

3:05- Patterson picks up six more, 2nd & 4…

2:57- Dirty horsecollar tackle, and Hill gets hurt at the worst time. That is the last thing the Patriots want is an injury.

2:51- Touchdown, Patriots! Gillislee with the five yard run to give the Patriots their first touchdown of the night. They went for two and converted. Panthers 25, Patriots 14

1:53- McCarron with the 1st down, but he was injured on the play. 1st & 10…

1:39- Decker with the assisted drop; 2nd & 10…

1:26- 1st & 10, Patriots from the Carolina 31…

:52- incomplete pass, 2nd & 10…

:46- Screen to Bolden goes for nothing…

:21- Incomplete pass, turnover on downs. Game over.

:00- The Panthers take a knee, and that’ll do it from North Carolina. The Panthers thoroughly dominated this game tonight, but the key of the dress rehearsal game is health, which they seem to have. Hill got banged up, but he was up and walking around on the sideline. Join us next Thursday when the Patriots travel to New Jersey to take on the Giants. Have a great weekend, and thanks again for joining us.

FINAL SCORE- CAROLINA PANTHERS 25, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 14
