We knew it was coming. The fans knew it was coming and possibly even the players knew it was coming. But nobody wanted to believe a Jets defense, who was so banged up, could not stop Kirk Cousins and the Vikings offense who ranks in the top 5 overall in total yardage and offense.
For the first half that is exactly what happened, the Jets held Kirk Cousins and Co. to just 10 points. Gang Green was going into the half trailing by just 3. Then Minnesota came to life and the Jets lost all confidence. It ended heart-breakingly with a 37-17 to the Vikes.
Kirk Cousins went 25/40 throwing over 240 yards on 2 TDs while rookie QB Sam Darnold went 17/42, 206 yards, 1 TD/1 Rushing TD and 3 INT, his worst day so far. While the main Jets WR core was hurt, Darnold was forced to utilize punt returners and kick returners as wide receivers for the day. But in the long run, that shouldn’t have made a difference since they originally were wide receivers.
The Jets only notched one sack by Brandon Copeland while Darnold was sacked 3 times on the day. The defense and offense were absent on the day either notching great numbers or failing in every category, both of which are not good for developing a young QB. Gang Green needs to be more consistent on the positive side to keep Darnold’s progression on track as a franchise QB. Going 17/42 is not franchise direction, rather that is another round of bust direction.
The Jets will go to Chi-town next week and face Mitchell Trubisky, Khalil Mack and Co. This adds up to be one of the biggest tests of the season against one of the best pass rushers in the game – Mack. This will be a tough match-up for a Jets O-line that currently is banged up as well.
All in all, the Jets need to be healthy to get better.
