Cleveland Cavaliers Awarded 2022 NBA All-Star Game

The best basketball players in the world will get together in Cleveland in February, 2022.

Thursday afternoon, the National Basketball Association officially awarded the 2022 All-Star Game and festivities to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Quicken Loans Arena will play host to All-Star weekend February 18-20, 2022.

Cleveland will host the NBA’s mid-season event for the third time in franchise history. 1997 marked the last time NBA All-Star weekend took place in Cleveland. Quicken Loans Arena was known as Gund Arena back then. Cleveland also hosted the game in 1981 at the old Richfield Coliseum.

The All-Star weekend will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the league. It will also be an economic boom for the city of Cleveland.

“Cleveland is a passionate sports city with a proven track record of hosting large-scale, global events,” NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said. “We thank Dan Gilbert, Len Komoroski and the civic leaders for their commitment, and we look forward to a weeklong celebration of our game.”

Upgrades to Quicken Loans played a key role in the NBA awarding the game to Cleveland. $140 million is renovations are currently taking place. The goal is to provide an enhanced experience for fans for all events taking place at Quicken Loans Arena.

“We are proud to host NBA All-Star weekend in Cleveland in 2022,” Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said.  “We have been working with the NBA, the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County to deliver this iconic event to Northeast Ohio for the last couple of years.  The transformation and new state-of-the-art Quicken Loans Arena was an important factor in the NBA’s decision to choose Cleveland for this exciting classic broadcast across the globe. The world will get to see the modern Cleveland and all of its diversity, innovation and promise for the future.”

NBA All-Star on court events will tip off on Friday, February 18 at Quicken Loans Arena with Mountain Dew Ice Rising Stars, an annual showcase for top rookies and second-year NBA players.  On February 19, State Farm All-Star Saturday Night will feature the Taco Bell Skills Challenge. In addition, the Three-Point and Slam Dunk contests will take place that night.  NBA All-Star 2022 will culminate with the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, February 20.

The NBA will host several events for fans of all ages at venues throughout the city.  These events, including NBA All-Star Practice and the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game will feature basketball programming and entertainment for fans. The public will also have up-close access to NBA players, legends and celebrities.
