Because of the holidays, our week 11 analysis of Kirk Cousins was a little delayed. To be clear, the following is Charting Cousins for week 11 at Chicago, not for the most recent game against Green Bay.

In week 11, the Vikings fell on the road to the Bears. Cousins’ numbers were decent, but multiple mistakes cost the Vikings a chance to take control of the NFC North.

Box Score Statistics

Cousins completed 30 of his 46 attempts for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He threw two interceptions and took two sacks. Cousins was responsible for 15 first downs, and he converted six of 12 third downs through the air. His completion percentage of 65 percent was decent this week, but his 5.7 yards per attempt was pitiful.

Film Breakdown

The film reveals that Cousins struggled early on, before taking advantage of soft coverages to pile up numbers late. He was pressured on 18 of his 51 dropbacks, but many of his worst plays came without pressure. He had three turnover-worthy passes and paid for two of them with interceptions, including a back-breaking pick six.

Cousins and the Vikings struggled early, going three-and-out on their first possession. They responded by moving the ball well after that, but consistent pressure on him and a terrible interception contributed to a total of zero first half points. But with the defense playing well, the Vikings were still in the game.

In the third quarter, the Vikings continued the trend of moving the ball before stalling out. The first drive of the quarter saw Cousins be accurate on all four attempts for nearly 30 yards, but the Vikings couldn’t convert on third down and had to punt. Later in the quarter, the defense forced a turnover in Bears’ territory, and the Vikings looked poised to get back in the game. Cousins was again accurate on all of his attempts, but a sack forced the Vikings to settle for a field goal.

Now entering the fourth quarter, the Bears held a 14-3 lead and had the ball. But on the first drive, the Vikings defense again forced a turnover in Bears territory. However, the Bears defense was able to hold the Vikings to a field goal again, as Cousins was again sacked on a critical down. Down 14-6, the Vikings defense was able to stop the Bears on the following drive. The stage was set for Cousins to lead a touchdown drive and tie the game up.

The stage wasn’t set for long. On the first play of the drive, Cousins made his second terrible decision of the game. This one was also intercepted, this time for a touchdown.

After that point, the game was essentially over. Cousins did lead two touchdown drives to give the Vikings a chance at an onside kick and miracle, but the Bears held on to take control of the NFC North.

Overall

On the day, Cousins was accurate on 32 of his 46 qualifying attempts for an accuracy percentage of 70 percent. That accuracy percentage is slightly above his season average, but his mistakes destroyed what was largely an accurate game.
