Fresh off a close loss to the Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders welcomed the Pittsburgh Steelers to O.co. The Steelers, playing last Sunday night looked to get back on the winning track. Meanwhile, the Raiders wanted to snag their third victory. Behind Derek Carr and his 322 yards, the Raiders defeated the Steelers 24-21. As a result, this victory runs the Raiders’ record to 3-10.
Despite playing in playoff irrelevant games, Derek Carr continues to enjoy his best statistical season. Combined with shaky line play, Carr stood in and delivered pinpoint passes all day. While you can question the organization, you cannot doubt what Carr brings to the table.
With the signing of CJ Anderson, Jon Gruden began to remodel the running game. Yet, the tandem of Doug Martin and Jalen Richard toted the ball for the Raiders. While only combining for 56 yards on 24 carries, the duo battered the Steelers defense, softening them up for the pass.
Once again, the Raiders needed to generate any semblance of a pass rush. Unfortunately, they are facing the Steelers and their prolific offense. With Ben Roethlisberger, the Raiders faced an offense looking to test all three levels immediately. In this game, the Raiders could only muster one sack and three hits.
With Antonio Brown, the Raiders encountered a receiver that feasts on all corners. Yet, he struggled to make an impact. With only five catches, Brown disappeared. On the other hand, Juju Smith-Schuster torched Oakland for 130 yards. Now, no one expected Gareon Conley to shut anyone down.Yet, Conley acquitted himself very well, knocking down two passes and playing sticky coverage. While Conley will show his inexperience on occasion, he provided a look into the future. If Oakland pairs him with another corner, the team will be set for the next decade.
If you stuck through this rough season, nothing can test your fandom. With that said, these games do not get any easier. In reality, the Steelers looked to roll over the Raiders, on their way to the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Raiders did not allow that. In reality, the Raiders showed heart and grit.Whether these games mean anything or not, the team showed up.
