In watching Mims on film, you will watch the good and the need to improve. First, Mims’ long arms give the quarterback a wide catch radius and throw window. More importantly, on posts, Mims open the window wider with his arm length. On the other hand, Mims works to overcome the early double-catching. Then again, he adjusts to different ball angles. Whether over his head, away from his body or into traffic, Mims executes.
With a track background, Mims shows that instant burst in the open field. Using deceptively quick strides, due to his build, Mims gets to top speed in a hurry. On go routes, Mims gets even quickly, forcing the corner to keep up. When he secures the ball, Mims accelerates away from contact. To his credit, Mims will streak across the feel, accelerating through the zone. By the time DB helps arrives, Mims is in the clear.
With sound position coaching, Mims can fine-tune his route plan. While not raw, Mims needs to finish the routes with a better degree of sharpness. Under the right coach, Mims can erase these tendencies in camp. Therefore, any investment in Mims will be worth it. He will benefit from a full camp, under a sharp offensive mind.
During his career in Waco, Mims excelled at the post, go, screen and out. For the same reason, Mims shows the aptitude to learn new routes quickly, depending on the teacher. Moreover, Mims shows a burgeoning aptitude for the backshoulder fade.
While Mims may not profile as a number one wideout, he could climb the depth chart in a hurry. The Raiders need receivers that can stretch the field. In the AFC West, the Raiders face corners that will try to camp out underneath. With Mims, the Raiders can utilize the stutter go or deep post.In return, the presence of a deep threat will open up underneath for the tight ends and the running game. Now, when Derek Carr finds Mims vertically, expect him to see the endzone. In addition, in the redzone, Mims will use his height to win.
