The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had the number one overall pick five times in their history. In the five times they have picked number one, they have selected two quarterbacks. The most recent number one overall pick, Jameis Winston, has been solid so far.
On the 8th day of BucMas… Santa brought us a franchise touchdown record. Earlier in the series, we brought up the moment of Jameis Winston being drafted. Now, four years into his career he is the franchise record holder for touchdowns.
5. Jameis Winston Sets the Franchise Touchdown Record
This season, Jameis Winston broke the franchise record for touchdown passes by a quarterback. While Andrew Adams was picking off Cam Newton over and over, Jameis was breaking records. In the second quarter of the home game against the Panthers, Jameis threw his 81st touchdown of his career. This broke the record of 80 touchdowns set by Josh Freeman, another Buccaneer first round pick. I’m sure the eye test tells us Bucs fans Jameis is much better than Freeman, so let’s hope he can stay longer. His fifth year option has been picked up by the team, but it will be largely up to the next regime whether Winston continues to be the quarterback of this franchise.
Earlier this season, many thought he would be released after this season. This season, Jameis has taken his game to the next level with mistake free football, especially since being benched earlier in the season. The question with Jameis has never been talent, but consistency. If he can continue that trend for years to come, then Jameis will be a star quarterback in the 813 for many years ahead. Let’s keep this one while we have him, Glazers.
