So what do the players think about the hiring of Kitchens as Browns head coach?
Quarterback Baker Mayfield should be pleased. Look at what the number one overall pick did once Kitchens took over as offensive coordinator. Mayfield could be the NFL offensive rookie of the year. Kitchens and Mayfield have the chance to be one of the best head coach and quarterback combinations in the league starting this season.
“It was great working with and learning from Freddie last year,” Mayfield said. “He has such a creative mind. )Freddie) creates mismatches and just put guys in position to take advantage of their opportunities. He puts trusts in us as players. He’s the same guy every day. I’m really excited about 2019 and the future of the Cleveland Browns.”
So how do other members of the offense feel about Kitchen’s hiring? The offense took off once he took over.
“Freddie really did a great job of working with the offensive players the last half of the year. He put us in the best position to succeed,” left guard Joel Bitonio said. “He connected well with us as players. (Freddie) brought energy, competitiveness and leadership. I’m really looking forward to what he can do as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.”
“I’m excited about the opportunity that he has,” wide receiver Jarvis Landry said. “I think this is the direction. We can build on all of things that we did well last year.”
Kitchens is an offensive coach, but that doesn’t mean defense isn’t important. Kitchens can pump in some energy for that side of the football as well.
“I believe in Freddie,” linebacker Christian Kirksey said. “I think he’s the right guy to lead this team. He’s a passionate guy and he gets it. I’m so excited to see how this team excels to the top.”
“I’m looking forward to building on the momentum we gathered in 2018 and powering through the 2019 season and beyond. Freddie is a good man,” linebacker Joe Schobert said .”I can’t wait to see what the new Cleveland Browns have in store.”
Hopefully Kitchens will get the time needed to get the Browns to the top of the mountain. Kitchens is head coach number five since owner Jimmy Haslam took over the team in 2012.
