Stats
Hands
Normally, the amount of reps during a practice week helps determine the ability to catch the football. While that is true, Doss takes this to a higher level. During his four seasons as an Aggie, he grabbed 321 passes. On film you see a natural receiver. With a crisp first snare, Doss quickly transitions to security. With a wide catch radius, the window remains open for any pass thrown his way. More importantly, Doss uses his size to fight for every contested catch. Contact doesn’t seem to bother him.
Speed
If you have a long frame like Doss, you’d expect a long-striding type of speed. That is exactly what his brings to the table. As he runs, Doss gains speed. Despite this, he does manage to gain excellent separation .
Route Running
After over three hundred game catches and four years, Doss looks clean. That is to say, he runs sharper patterns and never tips the routes. Savvy corners will watch film and pick up nuance. They will know depth, predict breaks and track targets. However, Doss shows the constant repetition of routes, rarely telegraphy them. If faced with press coverage, he will handfight and attempt to muscle a corner.
Agility
Initially, Doss does just enough, agility wise to beat a defender off the line. In addition, with the ball, he will disrupt their pursuit angle. In the red zone, look for Doss to deepen his routes to drive corners off and far enough to gain a bit of daylight.
Intangibles
With the high volume of passes, you’d think that Doss would coast and not do the little things that make him a complete receiver. However, he will get physical with a defender in the run game, driving him off the ball and re-engaging at a moment’s notice.
Raiders Fit
While the Raiders continue to figure out their receiving corps, Doss could be the middle rounds. Granted, receiver is not as pressing of a need as edge rusher, the team still need reliable targets. With a cast of Roberts, Nelson, Ateman and not much else, the Raiders need an infusion of talent. Plus, what team is going to turn down a sure-handed wideout with size and the ability to eat in the middle of the defense. Dodd could provide the perfect eventual bookend to whomever the Raiders add.
