2019 Raiders Draft Prospect Profile
Name: Mike Weber
Position: Running Back
School: Ohio State University
Weight: 214 pounds
Draft Projection: Day 3
While Weber does not appear to get people excited by his approach, notice that it works. With patience, he navigates through the line and makes his way downfield. For Weber, he sets up his blocks and reads the hole with outstanding vision and accuracy. When he escapes the line of scrimmage, Weber starts to read the location of the defenders. His vision, more than other gifts will turn that six-yard run into twenty yards of chunk yardage. In reality, Weber runs with his eyes more than anything else does. At the next level, that will suit him well. When he does meet contact, his legs churn and kicks himself free with high-knees and a strong yet quick guide arm to cast defenders aside. The key to Weber’s game is balance.
As he gets to the open field, Weber begins to string moves together. Although not sliding jump cuts, the ability to quickly shift and force defenders to cover more ground in pursuit. Weber knows angles and how to make that oncoming safety change his line and correct on the fly.
Granted, Weber possesses above average speed. Yet, he does not just accelerate through the hole. He times his speed to make the most of his burst. If there is daylight, chances remain that defenders will not track him down from behind. To that end, Weber possesses the burst to see a decent workload at the next level.
During his time in Columbus, Weber snagged 54 passes. Now, that seems like a fair amount, realize the type of passes. Mostly swing passes and dump offs found their way toward Weber. However, catching passes, regardless or type will help Weber gain valuable reps in the NFL. In all honesty, he makes the catches he should.
With speculation swirling that Chris Warren looking to gain the starting spot, the running back group remains wide open. Marshawn Lynch’s status remains unknown. Jalen Richard is a free agent and the Raiders mysteriously want Doug Martin back. In contrast, Weber brings in the ability to grind like Martin and catch swing passes like Richard. However, he may be a bit more explosive than both. In return, he brings third day value to a group that needs immediate impact players.
