Tackling: Coney is a monster. He’s everywhere on the field, delivering the hit with power and good technique. You almost wonder where the big neck pad is. Old school, downhill type of linebacker. 20/22.
Pass Coverage: Played solid pass coverage through college, but you have to wonder how he will do in the pros. Doesn’t have the speed or the athleticism to keep up with pro TE’s. Did show good instincts in pass coverage and set traps for opposing quarterbacks. 13/18.
Strength: Very strong. Has a tough upper body that leans into hits. Powerful player, can move the blocker at the line of scrimmage. 14/15.
Speed/Athleticism: Not the fastest or most athletic, he has adequate speed but will be limited in the pros. Very quick, and that’s what allows him to make plays. May loose draft stock at the combine due to a poor performance. 9/15.
FBI/Instincts: Very intelligent player with excellent instincts. Drifts to the ball. Very clear he studied a lot of tape in college. Always understood the opponent very well. Sometimes, was overaggressive and pulled himself out of plays. 10/12.
Pursuit/Range: Good pursuit and range. Range, again, will be limited due to athletic ability. Does normally take excellent pursuit angles when the play gets around him. 7/10.
Leadership/Attitude: Good leader and excellent attitude. High motor player. Tough at all times, doesn’t give up on plays and keeps fighting til the end. 8/8.
Overall: Te’Von Coney is an old school, downhill run stopping linebacker to the mold of Brian Urlacher. Coney will bring leadership and toughness to any team he joins. May need a year or two to transition to the speed of the NFL game. Coney will be a valuable piece in a 3-4 system. 81/100.
Personality Assessment:
Really smart kid, comes across as clean cut and intense. Arrested in 2016 & 2017 for marijuana possession. Says he learned from it. (-3).
