New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman addressed the team’s quarterback situation when he took the podium Wednesday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. He also took a moment to address trade rumors of another player.
FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer made a “bold prediction” earlier this month that the team would trade wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
“I predict Odell Beckham Jr. gets traded this offseason. I think that’s bold enough,” Glazer said via the Athletic.
Glazer refused to retract this prediction, insisting that the trade was going to go down.
“…I’m not walking my bold prediction back, not one f****** inch!” Glazer said. “Does it happen? A lot has to materialize for it to take place but out of principle I’m not walking a damn thing back.”
Glazer didn’t have to walk anything back. Gettleman, in his usual blunt manner, pulled the rug from underneath Glazer’s report. He simply reiterated what he said after the Giants’ season ended.
“We didn’t sign Odell Beckham to trade him,” Gettleman said. “I know that’s all over the place right now, but we didn’t sign him to trade him. That’s all I need to say about that.”
What makes Gettleman’s words especially believable is that he addressed the Beckham trade rumors without being asked to.
Beckham signed a five-year, $90 million extension before the beginning of the regular season. The trade rumors angered him but he didn’t address it directly. Instead, he chose to comment with a pair of cryptic tweets.
Beckham has been the subject of trade rumors for the past three offseasons. He is partially blame for the chatter. At the same time, Glazer sounded as if he simply wanted to be right as opposed to getting it right.
Bottom line is, Odell Beckham Jr. will be catching passes for the New York Football Giants for at least the next two seasons. He can opt out of his deal after 2020.
