Draft Projection: Day 3

Although Warring brings the willingness and the mentality, there is a need to fix the hand issues. First, he must get his hands firmly in the check and drive the defender. Meanwhile, Warring needs to use better leverage to give the perimeter running time to develop. As mentioned, these issues can be corrected with reps at the pro level.

When facing linebackers, Warring can win with sharp cuts to gain separation. Linebackers will struggle to recover on quick-breaking routes. Moreover, on jump balls, Warring should shine. A former basketball player, you can see the lift and bounce in his leaps. That should make for quality red zone targets.

In evaluating Warring’s hands, a couple considerations must occur. First, San Diego State did not enjoy stellar quarterback play. For instance, their main quarterback, Ryan Agnew struggled to complete passes. He succeeded at a 51.6 percent clip. Under those circumstances, you would expect Warring to see inconsistent passes. With technical adjustments needed, he will enhance his natural ability to stab away from his body.

Despite his angular frame, Warring explodes from the snap. Using a long but explosive gait, he can blow by most linebackers. In addition, his burst pressures safeties to maintain stride-by-stride coverage. For fear that the former Aztec gains a step, some defenders with maintain tighter coverage. Yet, any slip or false step leads to Warring blurring by.

Raiders Fit

With Jared Cook, catching passes from drew Brees; the Raiders need a tight end. Granted, everyone knows they currently employing four others. However, none of them possesses the ceiling that Warring does. With supreme athleticism and timing, he could give the Raiders a dynamic weapon. Detractors will discuss Warring’s blocking, but fail to see the overarching point. The ability to harness the potential seems like a task that should intrigue Jon Gruden. With Derek Carr, primed to miss Jared Cook, Warring brings a big-play-in-waiting vibe to the team. As Antonio Brown will command attention, Warring can make the most his targets and produce. With that said, do not be surprised to see him targeted in the red zone.
