The Cleveland Indians have extended the contract of manager Terry Francona. Tito will now serve as the tribe’s skipper through the 2022 season.

“I have no ambition to ever work somewhere else,” Francona said. “I mean there’s going to come a time when I can’t do this job the way I want to because of age. That may happen at some point, but I don’t have any ambition to ever work somewhere else. That’s because of the people here.”

Francona is currently in his seventh season in Cleveland. The extension is for two-years. Francona’s deal was scheduled to expire following the 2020 season.

After winning two World Series titles as manager of the Boston Red Sox, the Indians hoped his playoff experience would continue in Cleveland. Well it has to say the least.

The Indians have made the playoffs four times in Francona’s six seasons in Cleveland. In his first season in 2013, Cleveland hosted the American League wild card game. They lost to the Tampa Bay Rays in that one game playoff.

After missing postseason play in 2014 and 2015, Francona guided the tribe to an unexpected run to the World Series in 2016. Francona and the Indians took care of the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays before losing a heartbreaking game seven in extra innings to the Chicago Cubs at Progressive Field. The Cubs ended their 108-year World Series drought while the Indians World Series championship drought continues. Cleveland’s last World Series title came in 1948.

The Indians won the American League Central Division the last two seasons. However, they were eliminated in the division series by the New York Yankees in 2017 and the Houston Astros last season.

Francona’s 1,576 wins as a manager ranks him second among active Major League managers. He trails only Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants. Francona has a record of 547-427 as the Indians skipper.
