The Cleveland Browns addressed a pressing need Friday in their secondary. The team has come to terms with veteran safety Morgan Burnett.

The eight-year veteran will compete for a starting safety spot and add some much needed depth following the departure of Jabrill Peppers in the Odell Beckham trade.

This will mark a second tour in the AFC North for Burnett. The veteran safety appeared in eleven games with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018. Burnett started two games.

Burnett spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers. He was selected in the third round, number 71 overall, of the 2010 NFL draft out of Georgia Tech. The 6-1, 210 pound safety has started 104 of 113 career games. Burnett has recorded 713 tackles, 50 passes defensed, nine interceptions, nine fumble recoveries and forced eight fumbles.

Burnett will also provide much needed veteran leadership with playoff experience. He appeared in the NFC playoffs six consecutive years from 2011 through 2016.

The Browns also addressed a need for a backup quarterback courtesy of the former Alliance of American Football League.

Garrett Gilbert will join veteran Drew Stanton in the competition to be the backup quarterback behind Baker Mayfield in 2019. Gilbert spent eight weeks with the Orlando Apollos of the AAF before the league folded this week. Gilbert paced the AAF with 157 completions for a league-best 2,152 yards. He added 13 touchdown passes and 205 attempts.
