With a busy off-season, the Oakland Raiders revamped their entire roster. As a result, the heat of expectations intensifies, whether players or fans want to agree. Derek Carr needs to step up and deliver this team back to the playoffs. If you look unit-by-unit, Gruden and Mayock assembled an offense primed to succeed. Under those circumstances, Carr must step up. Today, we are going to take an overview of what he can expect initially.
Sound Running Game
With Marshawn Lynch retiring, the Raiders needed to assemble a quality run game behind Carr. In Gruden’s offense, heavy emphasis on the run helps the quarterback. The team pounds the ball, forcing the safeties and linebackers to creep up. As a result, receivers can find open areas. The Raiders, on paper, may employ a stable of quality runners. First, rookie Joshua Jacobs will probably start the season as the number one. Jacobs’ blend of hard running, sure hands, and sturdy blocking checks every box for Gruden. Add in Warren and Richard, Carr can rest easy, knowing that one of four backs can keep the offense moving. With Isaiah Crowell out for the year, the Raiders will either jkeep DeAndre Washington or hit the UDFA/FA market.
The One-Two
If Derek Carr leads the Raiders to the Super Bowl in the next couple season, the offseason before the 2019 set the stage for his ascension. By acquiring Antonio Brown, Carr can throw to a route technician with both speed and quickness. Granted, Michael Crabtree filled the number one role for Carr. However, he wasn’t the elusive, quick-twitch threat.
Additionally, Tyrell Williams adds a vertical dynamic. With all the talent that Amari Cooper brings to the field, the disconnect between him and Carr was obvious. If you look at his stat sheet, you’d see few targets on multiple occasions. In addition, if you are honest, Carr never seemed to place that Crabtree trust in him. Look at two of the most iconic moments of Carr’s career, to this point, who catches the ball? Antonio Brown, from day one, steps into the locker room as the unquestioned top receiver.
Truth
To summarize, Derek Carr will enjoy a deep, talented offense in 2019. Now, despite the protests of his most ardent backers, no excuses exist. The Oakland Raiders built an offense around him that should see him excel. With no excuses, the time to start winning is now.
