Going into OTA’s, there has been some question marks regarding the Patriots cornerback group. Who will make the final 53-man roster in September? Training camp and preseason games will tell us just that as the Patriots do have some depth. Here is the current depth chart for the Pats corners, according to Patriots.com.
RCB:
1. Stephon Gilmore
2. Jonathan Jones
3. Keion Crossen
4. Ken Webster and D’Angelo Ross
LCB:
1. J.C. Jackson
2. Jason McCourty
3. Duke Dawson Jr.
4. Joejuan Williams
Of course, not everyone can make the roster but a matchup I’m looking at is the battle between Ken Webster and Keion Crossen. Webster was picked in the 7th round this year in the draft after having a great season at Ole Miss. Crossen struggled mightily last year with 14 solo tackles. On many occasions, he was trailing behind receivers that allowed for big gains in the passing and running game. Crossen was also a part of special teams’ units and that’s one of the reasons why Bill Belichick might keep him around for a 2nd season. Crossen should not be a lock to be on the roster and be sure to keep an eye on Webster in preseason games. If Crossen struggles, Webster could potentially take his spot, as they have similar playing styles
Guys like Gilmore, Jackson, McCourty, and Jones will be in with the 1st team for the most part of camp but having depth with Dawson Jr. and Webster will keep the rotation moving. Ross and Williams could be longshots to make the roster. Depth at this position is my x-factor of the 2019-2020 season. If everyone can stay healthy, the Pats defense will be a daunting task for any offense in the NFL.
