WWE SmackDown Live Recap: June 18, 2019

A.K.A. The One Where Drake Maverick Finally Did It

One more show until the first-ever WWE Stomping Grounds. Xavier Woods is scheduled to face Dolph Ziggler. A Moment of Bliss with Bayley is on the card. If past history tells us anything, the talk show might become a brawl and Shane McMahon will likely show up yet again. All this, and maybe we’ll find out who Baron Corbin’s special guest referee will be, tonight on SmackDown Live.

Results:

  • Dolph Ziggler def. Xavier Woods
  • Heavy Machinery def. The B-Team
  • Elias & Drew McIntyre def. Miz & R-Truth in an elimination tag team match
  • Drake Maverick def. R-Truth to win the 24/7 Championship
  • Kofi Kingston & Seth Rollins def. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens 2-0 in a best 2-out-of-3 falls match

Match of the Night: Kofi Kingston & Seth Rollins def. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens 2-0 in a best 2-out-of-3 falls match

No surprise that the two top champions put on the best match of the show. Kingston and Rollins have continued their hot streak from Wrestlemania all the way into the summer. Owens and Zayn lost the first fall early, but fought back to make the main event and entertaining affair.

Three Thoughts:

On To The Next One

Dolph Ziggler is just not a threat. Having him as a one-off opponent for Kofi Kingston at Super ShowDown wasn’t bad. The fact that their feud has been extended to Stomping Grounds has been pretty boring. Hopefully Kingston will be on to a new challenger after defeating Ziggler on Sunday. Ziggler’s promos have been repetitive, and there are plenty of potential challengers on the SmackDown Live roster ready to tangle with Kofi for the belt.

Don’t Cross Cross

Tonight’s Moment of Bliss segment was what all wrestling talk shows aspire to be. It was to the point, had drama, and made viewers more invested in the upcoming match. Bayley came out with a bit more edge, drinking coffee in Alexa Bliss’ face and eventually taking her down due to her insults. Bliss came across as genuinely believing she’s right, and had a scathing line about Bayley peaking in NXT. The best insults are the ones that could be true.

Nikki Cross remains the wildcard in this story. She believes Bliss for now, but most believe Bliss’ intentions are deceitful. When Alexa does eventually cross Nikki Cross, the pop for her getting her comeuppance could be tremendous. Watch the whole segment below, because they nailed it.

Miz Speaking Truth, Truth Being Truth

The Miz said what all of us were thinking this week about Shane McMahon. The son of the owner continues to take up tons of airtime on both shows, and Miz was sick of it. WWE gave Miz a line that shows they know we are sick of Shane, but aren’t going to change.

Miz’s tag team partner, R-Truth, lost the 24/7 Championship tonight as well. Dressed as Carmella, Drake Maverick finally got one over on Truth and took the gold. Maverick gets married this weekend, so hopefully he gets pinned by officiant Truth at the altar. Time will tell.

Grade: C+

The show overall was decent. WWE continued their trend of using more of their roster and getting them on TV. Some segments rocked like the IIconics backstage, the 24/7 title work, and Moment of Bliss. Unfortunately, some of the segments felt like placeholders, especially Shane McMahon and the top title feuds. It wasn’t a bad show, but it wasn’t the excellent offering WWE had on Monday night.

One More Thing:

Kabuki Warriors sighting! This is not a drill! It was an IIconic backstage segment all around.
