After weeks of waiting and begging, someone finally answered Aleister Black’s challenge last week. Black had been encouraging someone to come and knock on his door and pick a fight with him. After starting off in a tag team with Ricochet on the main roster, Black has been put in these vignettes since the Superstar Shake-up. Now, someone has finally stepped up to challenge Aleister Black. Who could it be? Here are three possibilities:
This potential match has been telegraphed by the “Apex Predator” himself. Orton is a bonafide main eventer and multiple-time world champion. If WWE wants to push Black as a real threat, having his first main roster feud be against Orton would make him credible to casual fans. Orton seems up to the challenge, based on his twitter:

When motivated, Orton puts on tremendous matches. Black has been able to showcase his skills since he has joined the main roster, but hasn’t had the chance to showcase his in-ring psychology. Orton can match him, and WWE can let the fans dictate the face/heel dynamic. Ideally, Black would be the anti-hero face and Orton would be his prime heel self.
This match has built-in history from NXT that WWE could continue to build on. “El Idolo” Andrade lost his NXT Championship to Black back at NXT TakeOver: Orlando on Wrestlemania 34 weekend. Now both men have been bumped up to the main roster and could continue their heated feud.
Andrade had been feuding with Finn Balor for the Intercontinental Championship. Last week, Shinsuke Nakamura stepped up to challenge Balor, leaving Andrade without a dance partner. Having Andrade come knocking on Black’s door in search of vengeance or retribution makes for a great story. Black’s character is seen as methodical and wise; contrasting him with a sneaky and desperate foe could give him more opportunity to expand on his character’s motivations.
This is the wildcard choice. Not to be confused with the “Wild Card Rule”, which still confuses us. No, this is because Rusev has been missing in action from WWE for a while. Reports say that he could be on the way out of the company sooner rather than later. It’s also been reported that he requested some time off.
While he’s been away, the WWE universe has missed him. Once upon a time, Rusev was the most popular person on WWE television with his “Rusev Day” shtick. With WWE seemingly unwilling to push Rusev again, they may go the complete opposite direction.
We’ve seen in the past WWE seemingly “punish” those who were reportedly on the outs of the company. The Revival have been booked to look ridiculous in segments after they requested their release. If WWE wants to de-value Rusev before he leaves, having him lose cleanly and consistently to Black could be the way to do it. Even if this isn’t a punishment, Rusev and Black could put on some hard-hitting clashes. Frame it as Rusev being tired of new wrestlers showing up and taking his spot, and wanting to cut the new guy down to size.
