Maurice Harris’ versatility could be the reason why he makes the 53-man roster come early September. Standing at 6’3, Harris can be crucial as a red zone threat. Maurice has shown he is a speed guy as well so maybe playing as a slot receiver could be the role he fills. Julien Edelman is expecting to be ready come the regular season along with Demaryius Thomas. This could open up a roster spot if neither are healthy and Harris fits right in.
The New England Patriots have seen something in Harris that the Washington Redskins didn’t, the versatility he brings. Maurice was an undrafted free agent and played almost 3 seasons in Washington. He tallied a total of 40 catches for 1 career touchdown. There is not much value in those stats, but we all know how Belichick is, he finds the diamonds in the rough that can help his team win year after year. Being able to move around as a receiver is important because some players are one-dimensional. Tall guys like Harris normally play on the outside but confusing defensives by having a huge guy in the slot can make this Patriots offense dynamic.
There’s no question that the Patriots offense will not be the same without Gronk. The tightened position seems to be figured out early in camp, but the receiving core is missing some key players due to injury. My prediction is Harris makes the roster and becomes a guy that spots in and out throughout the season to take the pressure off of guys like Edelman and Dorsett.
