Preseason Week Two Live Blog

Welcome to the Preseason Week Two Live Blog! Tonight the Patriots take on the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. The Patriots and Titans had joint practices leading up to this game, so these teams know each other very well. Tom Brady will NOT play tonight, mainly because he got a ton of reps in 11-on-11 during the week. There are a bunch of guys on the bubble, and many of them will end up on NFL teams. Keep an eye on guys who didn’t play a lot in Week One who may play a lot tonight. That is typically a sign that they are given their chance to shine or increase their trade value.

The Patriots wide receiver unit is a bit banged up tonight too, so it will be interesting to see if anyone steps up and takes advantage of the unfortunate injury situation. Jakobi Meyers has been an absolute stud in camp to date, and tonight could go a long way towards locking him into a roster spot. Braxton Berrios and Dontrelle Inman are also battling; Inman was invisible for the first couple weeks of camp but woke up in Week One against the Lions. He could give the coaches a tough decision to make with a strong showing tonight.

The game kickoffs in just under an hour. Be sure to join us for up to the second updates which include details and opinions about the Patriots game. Be sure to follow our Preseason Week Two Live Blog, and enjoy the game!

FIRST QUARTER

15:00- The Patriots will kickoff, and that gives us the chance to see this special defense to start the night. Interesting roster battles at every position, what else can you ask for? The Titans will start from their own 25 after the kickoff out of the end zone.

14:52- Nine yard run by Dion Lewis; 2nd & 1…

14:32- Sack by Cowart, the 5th round pick of the Pats! 3rd & 6…

14:08- Incomplete pass due to pressure and good coverage from JoeJuan Williams. Mike Vrabel is challenging the DPI…interesting…call stands, and the Titans are charged a timeout. 4th & 6…

14:01- Berrios with a six-yard return; the Patriots take over at their own 30. 1st & 10…

13:50- Deep throw down the middle to Inman is incomplete; 2nd & 10…

13:43- Interception by old friend Logan Ryan; terrible throw, you just can’t make that throw. 1st & 10, Titans…

13:31- Lewis gets stuffed on 3rd & 3, and the Titans will punt…flag on the play for an illegal shift. The Patriots declined the penalty, and the offense will come back onto the field.

11:55- Damien Harris finally gets some action, picking up two on his first carry. Wynn is also playing…

11:20- End-around goes for just two yards; 3rd & 5…

10:43- Delayed blitz by Vacarro is perfectly timed for a sack, but the Titans were called for illegal hands to the face, giving the Patriots a first down.

10:12- Harris again, this time for four yards; 2nd & 6…

9:42- Harris is split wide, and they throw him an out which he caught for five yards; 3rd & 1…

9:08- Horrible blocking leads to Harris getting caught in the backfield; 4th & 2, Pats will punt…wow, they got a lucky bounce. The Titans take over at their own 13…

8:21- Titans run for one, 2nd & 9…

7:45- Delanie Walker with a catch for the 1st down…

7:05- Williams with another PBU; this kid is making plays just like he did in practice all week. 2nd & 10…

6:59- Incomplete screen pass to the flat; 3rd & 10…

6:52- No pressure on Mariota allows him to find a receiver for 21 yards and the 1st down; Derek Rivers was hurt on the play. 1st & 10, Titans…

6:09- Lewis with the catch and run for 10; another first down for the Titans as they continue to drive…

5:06- What appeared to be a touchdown run will now be a penalty for the Titans. It was still an excellent run, but that is a killer penalty. 2nd & 9…

4:59- Munson with the tackle for New England to force the Titans into a 3rd down situation; 3rd & 5…

4:36- Garbage DPI call because Mariota can’t throw; that was a bad throw, and Williams gets penalized. That was NOT DPI.

4:31- Touchdown, Titans. Bad series overall for the Patriots, but they got screwed on that Mariota “deep ball”. Titans go for two and convert on a DUMB play by Mariota. I’m sorry, but I don’t want my injury-prone starting quarterback diving over defenders for a rushing touchdown in Week Two of the preseason. Call me crazy, it just seems like a bad idea. Titans 8, Patriots 0

4:16- Nine-yard reception by Johnson; 2nd & 1…

3:42- Harris with a tough run for four; 1st & 10 from their own 39…

3:09- Meyers makes a nice catch for 16; 1st & 10…

2:39- Harris is starting to look goooood; 2nd & 2…

1:28- Hoyer avoids pressure and runs for two yards; 2nd & 8…

:47- Harris with another catch, this time for 11; 1st & 1 from the 21…

:09- Harris makes a nice cutback and a 20 yard run before getting tackled right at the goal line; strong series for the rookie from Alabama. That is the end of the first quarter. Titans 7, Patriots 0

SECOND QUARTER

14:26- Touchdown, Patriots! After getting stuffed on 1st down, Bolden takes the toss in for six! New England goes for two, and they convert with…guess who? Jakobi Meyers again. The kid just makes plays. Patriots 8, Titans 8

13:55- Tannehill in the game, and he hands it off for a gain of four. Tannehill is…not good. 2nd & 6…

12:35- Nice play there though by Tannehill as he drops one in the bucket for the 1st down. 1st & 10…

12:03- Apparently Tannehill was made aware of my slight of him and is now throwing the ball like Brett Favre. 1st & 10 from the NE 26…

11:25- Six-yard run on 1st down; 2nd & 4 from the Patriots 20…

10:44- That is just too easy; run for five, 1st & 10…

10:01- Touchdown, Titans. It didn’t appear that he was in as he flew over the pilon, but the Patriots will not challenge. The Titans kick the extra point, and they take the lead. Titans 15, Patriots 8

9:53- Olszewski with the six-yard reception; 2nd & 4…

9:12- Horrible pass protection, again, by the o-line. Don’t get Hoyer hurt, he is an effective backup. 3rd & 10…

8:47- Beck makes a catch for seven, and the Pats will punt; the Titans take over at their own 37.

7:43- Six-yard run as the Patriots continue to get gashed by the Titans run game. I understand these are backups, but this has not been pretty. 2nd & 4…

6:30- 1st down conversion on the thrown by Tannehill; 1st & 10 from their own 45…

5:52- McNichols runs for five; 2nd & 5…

5:18- Winovich forces a terrible back-foot throw from Tannehill that ends up in the dirt; 3rd & 6…

5:12- Flags everywhere; Duke Dawson called for hands to the face; 1st & 10…

5:06- Winovich gets pressure again, forcing Tannehill to throw it away. 2nd & 10…

5:02- Brooks breaks up the pass; nice play by the special teams ace; 3rd & 10…

4:55- Incomplete pass down the middle and the Titans will be forced to punt; 4th & 10…

4:45- Good punt coverage by the Titans will force the Patriots to start this series from their own one. With the pressure issues they’ve had tonight, look out for the safety in this situation. Titans 15, Patriots 8

4:37- Sorry. I could see it coming from a mile away. Safety, Titans. Gross blocking, just a blatant hold. Titans 17, Patriots 7

4:31- The Titans offense will take over at their own 37 after the safety kickoff. 1st & 10 from their own 28…penalty…once again on the Patriots, this time for having too many men on the field.

4:26- Tannehill completes it for 11; 1st & 10, and the Patriots just don’t look good this half.

3:42- The Titans finally get called for holding; Winovich has been held multiple times, and this time he gets the call. 1st & 20…

3:35- Pass is complete for 10; 2nd & 10…

2:59- Seven more for the Titans; 3rd & 3…

Latest From FPC on SportsCastr

2:22- Sack, Winovich!! This kid is a natural pass rusher, just what the Patriots needed. The kid had multiple moves, great balance, and he has zero fear whatsoever. The Titans will be forced to punt…

1:59- Another strong punt for Tennessee and the Patriots offense will take over at their own nine.

1:50- One-yard run by Bolden; 2nd & 9…

1:46- Bolden runs for no gain; 3rd & 9…

1:39- That series was…not pretty. A screen pass to Bolden, who falls, gets up and runs for one yard. 4th & 8, and Jake Bailey will punt it away. 5.1 hangtime…hmmm.

:46- Logan Woodside, the new qb for the Titans, gets drilled on the throw; 2nd & 10…

:40- Read option goes for five; 3rd & 5…

:11- 10-yard pickup on the throw; 2nd & 10 from the Patriots 47. Timeout, Patriots.

:00- Winovich got good pressure again, but Woodside made a nice throw for 15 yards. It doesn’t matter though because time expired on the play. That is the end of the first half; Titans 17, Patriots 8

14:12- Strong run by Brossette is negated by a hold; that is not good when that happens, not if you’re trying to make the team.

13:48- Gostkowski misses the field goal…I’m just going to keep my mouth shut because the Gostkowski fan club will attack me with their pitchforks again. The Titans maintain the lead; Titans 17, Patriots 15

13:40- 12-yard run for the Titans; 1st & 10…

Final Score: New England Patriots 22, Tennessee Titans 17

There is a lot to take away from this game, but two things really stood out to me- Damien Harris and Jakobi Meyers. Both rookies look like they’ll be able to help in a big way, which is going to be helpful as they wait for the wounded veterans to return. Thanks for being with us tonight, and we will see you all again on Thursday from Foxboro when the Patriots battle the Panthers in the “dress rehearsal” for the season.
