Baker Mayfield hopes to play a good amount in Friday’s preseason game at Raymond James Stadium as the Cleveland Browns visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I would like to say at least a half, but that is not my call,” Mayfield said.

Preseason game number three is traditionally known as the dress rehearsal for the regular season. It may not be much of a dress rehearsal for Mayfield and the starters.

“It is not a secret. We are going to play our guys some. I do not know how long yet,” head coach Freddie Kitchens said. “We have had a physical camp. You just have to factor all those things in and then make a determination. I am really not trying to avoid the question. It is just that I do not have all the answers yet because I do not know.”

Mayfield has only played one offensive series in the preseason. It was an effective drive resulting in a touchdown. Some action Friday is important.

“None of the starters play in the fourth game just because it is so close to the real one. Just find a tune-up, ironing everything out, treating it more like a game week. Just the mental prep work of getting into a routine,” Mayfield said. “I am looking forward to playing.”

Perhaps Kitchens will call an audible in regards to Mayfield’s playing time. Kitchens says he doesn’t know exactly how much Mayfield will play. He has a very good idea in his head.

So why would a change be made? Well risk of injury of course. Thursday evening Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter of their game.

If Mayfield or any of the starters suffer an injury, it will be the talk around town as to why the starters played as much as they did. Welcome to the NFL in 2019. The preseason can’t end soon enough. Let’s to the games that matter.
