When it comes to passing yards, the AFC West has two of the top three quarterbacks in the NFL. It is obviously difficult to have success when the best passer in the league is in your division. As a result, your team must play against him twice a year. However, the two teams in the AFC West that do not have a passing attack to match, have to play against elite passers for a fourth of their season.
As the better passers in the league begin to emerge, fans must now start establishing the top teams in their division, and there is no better place to begin looking at than the quarterback position.
Due to divisions containing four teams each, ranking each division’s quarterbacks tends to be fairly straightforward, and like any decent rankings list, we will start from the bottom.
#4 Joe Flacco, Denver Broncos
Although he has won more Super Bowls than the rest of the AFC West quarterbacks combined, Joe Flacco finds himself very distant from his peak performance levels. He has thrown close to 800 yards through three games for the Denver Broncos, and has led them to an 0-3 record. Flacco’s new team may not match the talent of his Super Bowl-winning Baltimore Ravens, but he has been far from earning any “elite” tag this season.
#3 Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders
Maybe its bias, or maybe its still hanging on to the high level of play Carr exhibited in 2016 but putting him at the second-to-worst spot hurts. It hurts even more to admit how dangerously close he was to slipping down to #4. Carr has not been his best in 2019, but fared decent while leading the Raiders to a 1-2 record. He threw for 699 yards this season, and once again appears to be finding comfort in throwing short passes . However, Carr has looked reticent on many of his deeper throws. With the tough schedule the Raiders face, he will need to air it out more.
#2 Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers
It is truly impressive how Philip Rivers has been in the league for 15 years and still somehow manages to convince fans that the best is not behind him. Rivers in 3rd in the league in passing yards with 944 through three games this season. Rivers has led the San Diego Chargers to a 1-2 record, with all three games finishing as one-possession games. Seeing Rivers with a losing record in games decided by one possession is strange. Yet, he is missing his bellcow back Melvin Gordon and we are only three games into the NFL season.
#1 Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
What is there to be said about Mahomes that has not been said yet? He is currently the best passer in the game, and it is only his second season. Mahomes has been torching defenses and makes it look easy. He has the Chiefs running white hot and riding a three-game winning streak to start the season. Mahomes has thrown 1195 yards over three games. 1195 yards in three games puts Mahomes on pace to throw about 6,373 yards. That would decimate Peyton Manning’s record (5,477) by just under 900 yards. Mahomes is the best of the best in the league right now. Additionally, he appears poised to continue dominating the AFC West and the rest of the league.
