Welcome to Week Five of the 2019 NFL Season! The Patriots travel to Washington today to take on the Redskins, and we’ll have up to the minute updates and opinions in our Week Five Live Blog. Stick around, you’ll be smarter for it. The Patriots have looked every bit the defending champ that they are, dominating on defense over the first month of the season. The offense is banged up on the offensive line and the weapons in the passing game are somewhat questionable, but they have found a way to score, for the most part. The Redskins are in the opposite position- they are maybe, besides the Dolphins, the worst team in the NFL.

Washington has questions all over the place, and they have a lame-duck head coach in Jay Gruden, so that situation is ugly. It is important to remember that these are still NFL players with pride, so the Patriots cannot afford to take them lightly. Here are the inactive players for today’s matchup:

Anthony Sherman: “On To The Next Chapter”

March 5, 2021

Patriots- QB Cody Kessler, S Patrick Chung, RB Rex Burkhead, RB Damien Harris, S Nate Ebner, OL Korey Cunningham, DL Byron Cowart

Redskins- QB Case Keenum, LB Josh Harvey-Clemons, CB Aaron Colvin, G Brandon Scherff, TE Vernon Davis, TE Jordan Reed, C Ross Pierschbacker

We are about 20 minutes away from kickoff, so get your snacks ready, fire up your wireless device and television, and let’s get ready for another great NFL Sunday. Enjoy the game!

FIRST QUARTER

15:00- The Redskins elected to receive, and Colt McCoy and Co. will come onto the field first. Away we go…and the Patriots just called timeout; before a single play. FOOOOOCUS.

14:54- 12-yard reception for a 1st down by McLaurin; 1st & 10…

14:24- Peterson runs for two yards; 2nd & 8…

13:40- Thompson tried to stretch it out, but Hightower had awesome pursuit and shut it down. 3rd & 9…

13:01- SACK!! Winovich picks up his 4th sack of the year, an impressive stat for a rookie who only plays on passing downs. Olszewski fair caught it at the 17, and that is where Brady and the offense will take over. 1st & 10, Patriots…

12:28- Incomplete on the drop by LaCosse; 2nd & 10…

12:18- Michel picks up 11 on the catch in the flat; 1st & 10…

11:54- Gordon on the comeback for five; 2nd & 5…

11:38- Nobody was open, and pressure forced Brady to throw it away; 3rd & 5…

11:12- White for eight and another Patriots 1st down; 1st & 10…

11:07- Brady overthrows an open Josh Gordon down the middle of the field; that was a touchdown. 2nd & 10…

11:02- Pressure again forces a throwaway; 3rd & 10…

10:57- Brady sacked, and that series comes to an end pretty quickly. New England continues the trend from last week- bad offense.

10:06- Peterson runs for two; 2nd & 8…

9:27- Touchdown, Redskins. The Patriots aren’t able to tackle (five guys were near him, two had their hands on him) and that leads to the long touchdown run on the end-around. That was pathetic. Redskins 7, Patriots 0

9:20- Michel runs for a gain of zero; Dorsett is also hurt. 2nd & 10…

8:55- Izzo for 20 and a 1st down…

8:27- And this time he finds LaCosse for 15 more; 1st & 10 from the 25…

7:59- Michel with a gain of 16 through the air; 1st & Goal…

7:33- Michel for three; 2nd & Goal…

7;13- TOUCHDOWN, PATRIOTS!! Edelman makes the catch, and that is what we should expect to see from the Patriots offense. New England went no-huddle for the score. One would assume the game is tied, but of course, newly signed kicker Mike Nugent missed the extra point. This has been an ugly start overall for the Patriots. Redskins 7, Patriots 6

7:03- SACK! Shelton makes the sack and the Redskins lose seven on the play; 2nd & 17…

6:22- Weird throw by McCoy that was incomplete; 3rd & 17…

6:18- Screen is incomplete because Jamie Collins just applied too much pressure; 4th & 17…

6:11- Fair-caught at the Patriots 46; good field position for Brady and the offense, who will likely stay in their up-tempo offense. 1st & 10, Patriots…

6:01- Brady sacked for a loss of 10; Newhouse lost the block. 2nd & 20…

5:20- Gordon picks up 25 on the catch; he put quite the stiff-arm on the defender. 1st & 10…

4:50- Edelman with the catch and run for 13; 1st & 10…

4:19- Johnson picks up five on the catch; 2nd & 5…

3:44- Incomplete at the goal line, and Izzo is called for OPI; horrible call.

3:40- Edelman picks up 10 of the 14 they needed; 3rd & 4…Edelman jumps offside (foooooocus), 3rd & 9…

2:46- Gordon makes the catch for what appeared to be eight, but the Patriots got a great spot that could be challenged (it is, and it WILL be 4th down after the review, I promise.) 4th & 1…

2:46- The Patriots will go for it…

2:30- …and it doesn’t work because it was a trick play direct snap to James White; yuck. 1st & 10, Redskins, and they also have all the momentum in the game.

2:08- Peterson runs for seven; 2nd & 3…

1:48- Peterson runs for one; 3rd & 2…

1:03- Four yards and a first down on the completion; 1st & 10…

:18- McCoy runs for nine; 2nd & 1 as the 1st quarter comes to an end. The Redskins came to play today, and if the Patriots don’t wake up, this will be their “2018 Detroit” all over again. Redskins 7, Patriots 6

SECOND QUARTER

15:00- Loss of one on the run; 3rd & 2…

14:09- SACK! Hightower makes a huge play to try and regain some momentum; 4th & 9…

13:30- Touchback, and the Patriots offense will take over at their own 25. 1st & 10…

13:23- Michel runs for four; 2nd & 6…

13:02- Michel runs for three more; 3rd & 3…

12:25- White for four, and the Patriots pick up he 1st down; 1st & 10…

12:01- Three more on the screen pass to White; 2nd & 7…

11:29- Incomplete pass to Edelman, but the Redskins were called for pass interference. 1st & 10, Patriots, from the Redskins 27…the Redskins, are challenging the interference call.

11:29- Call stands; 1st & 10, Patriots…

11:23- Incomplete to Edelman, who dropped an easy catch; 2nd & 10…

11:19- Slow-developing screen play is knocked down by Kerrigan; 3rd & 10…

11:14- Slant to White for a gain of three, and out comes Nugent…

10:36- FIELD GOAL, PATRIOTS! Nugent drills the 37-yard field goal, and the Patriots take the lead for the first time this afternoon. They are driving pretty easily, but mistakes are costing them big time today in the points department. Patriots 9, Redskins 7

10:30- Loss of three on the run by Sims; that was a similar play to the touchdown. 2nd & 13…

9:04- Flag down on what looked like a stop for the Patriots; the flag was on Washington, so the Redskins will punt.

8:16- 12-yard gain by Edelman; 1st & 10…

8:00- Sack; Brady loses 12 on the play; 2nd & 17…

7:24- Incomplete pass; 3rd & 17…

6:54- Edelman picked up 16, and it appeared they were going for it, but they punt team ran on the field at the last second to set up for the punt.

6:18- FUMBLE!! What looked like a first down reception is punched out by Jonathan Jones, and the Patriots offense is set up in the red zone. 1st & 10…

6:04- Incomplete pass intended for Gordon; 2nd & 10…

5:57- White picks up four on the catch; 3rd & 6…

5:19- Interception, Redskins. Brady chucks it up like a rookie and gives away points…again. That is two weeks in a row that Brady has thrown a terrible interception in the red zone and gave away points. 1st & 10, Redskins, from their own one.

5:13- Peterson somehow ends up with four yards when he appeared stuffed at the goal line; 2nd & 4…false start, 2nd & 9…

4:12- 19-yard gain by McLaurin; 1st & 10…

3:46- Peterson running hard, but the Redskins are called for holding again. 1st & 20…false start, 1st & 25. This is gross football being played by both teams.

3:00- Another flag, this time for holding, but it is declined. 2nd & 21…

2:36- Gain of 10 on the catch; 3rd & 11…timeout, Patriots. They have one remaining.

2:21- Seven-yard gain by Sprinkle and the Patriots will get the ball back with just under two minutes to go in the half. 4th & 4…

2:00- What appeared to be a strong return is all for not as the Patriots are called for an illegal block in the back. There are not many good returns that aren’t called back. 1st & 10 from the Patriots 28…

1:43- White runs for four; 2nd & 6…

1:22- Brady sails it past White for the incomplete pass; 3rd & 6…

1:15- Brady runs for the first down, and when he slid his knee got stuck in the dirt. The 1st down was negated by another hold; 3rd & 15…

1:10- White runs for five; 4th & 10…

:58- The Redskins take over at their own 28…

:51- INTERCEPTION!! PATRIOTS! Jason McCourty sets up the offense at the Redskins 11-yard line. 1st & 10…

:46- Meyers picks up six on the catch; 2nd & 4 from the Redskins five…

:41- Brady throws it away; 3rd & 4…

:34- Brady is forced to throw it away because nobody could get open.

:34- Field Goal, Patriots! Nugents delivers again, and the Patriots extend their lead to five. Patriots 12, Redskins 7

:27- Peterson runs for four, and that will be the final play of the first half. Ugly stuff out there again, especially for the New England offense. The Patriots do have the lead though, which is always a good thing.

PATRIOTS 12, REDSKINS 7

HALFTIME

THIRD QUARTER

15:00- Michel runs for two; 2nd & 8…

14:24- Michel for two more; 3rd & 6…

13:38- White picks up 22 on the big third-down reception; 1st & 10…

12:53- Michel runs for five; 2nd & 5…

12:03- Michel runs for 10; 1st & 10…

11:36- Bolden runs for four before being crushed by Landon Collins; 2nd & 6…

10:57- TOUCHDOWN!! Patriots! Bolden makes the catch on the deep wheel route up the sideline, and Nugent connects on the extra point. That is exactly what the Patriots offense needed to start the third quarter. Patriots 19, Redskins 7

10:48- Five-yard gain on 1st down; 2nd & 5…

10:13- McLaurin with the 22-yard pickup through the air; 1st & 10…

9:40- Loss of one on the run by Peterson; 2nd & 11…illegal use of hands to the face, 2nd & 21…

8:56- Richardson gains eight on the play; 3rd & 13…

7:47- Incomplete pass and the Redskins are forced to punt; 4th & 13…punt is fair caught at the 11.

7:40- Michel runs for no gain; 2nd & 10…

6:57- Nice catch, but will it count after the flag?… Yes it will as the Patriots decline the holding penalty. Edelman helps Brady jump to 3rd ALL TIME in passing yards. 1st & 10…

6:30- Michel runs for 25; 1st & 10…

6:00- Bolden picks up four more; 2nd & 6…

5:18- Edelman with the catch and run for 32 yards and sets the Patriots offense up at the Redskins 13-yard line; 1st & 10…

4:35- TOUCHDOWN, PATRIOTS!! Sony Michel runs it in from 13-yards out and help extend the lead to three scores. Nugent connected on the extra point; Patriots 26, Redskins 7

4:27- Thompson runs for 11 on 1st down; 1st & 10…

4:00- Thompson runs for two; 2nd & 8…

3:36- McCoy took a shot down the field, but the pass was overthrown; 3rd & 8…

3:31- Van Noy smartly gets a hand up and bats down the pass; 4th & 8 and the Redskins will punt.

3:24- Gordon picks up 15 on the crossing route; 1st & 10…

2:39- Michel picks up six on the catch; 2nd & 4…

2:08- Bad timing on the play-action pass because LaCosse got caught up on the line; 3rd & 4…

1:45- Brady is sacked, and the Patriots are forced to punt.

1:22- Incomplete pass due to heavy pressure; 2nd & 10…

1:11- The pass was incomplete, but Gilmore was called for illegal contact to the face; 1st & 10…

:30- Thompson makes the 1st down reception; 1st & 10…

:00- SACK!! Hightower and Bennett meet at McCoy and crush him to end the 3rd quarter, a quarter dominated by the Patriots. Patriots 26, Redskins 7

FOURTH QUARTER

15:00- Thompson picks up six on the play; 3rd & 13…

14:08- The Redskins try to use the Patriots speed against them, but Bentley was not having it as he crushed the back on the catch; the Patriots offense takes over at their own 42.

12:22- Edelman picks up seven; 2nd & 3…

12:03- White runs for four; 1st & 10…

11:38- Brady eludes pressure but LaCosse can’t make the catch; 2nd & 10…

11:34- Gordon catches the quick hitter for six yards; 3rd & 4…

10:58- Michel with a strong run of 15 yards, putting him at 82 for the day. 1st & 10…

10:31- Michel runs for seven more; 2nd & 3…

9:54- Michel for a loss of one; 3rd & 4…

9:14- TOUCHDOWN, PATRIOTS!! Izzo makes the play this time, and it was all setup by Brady’s recognition of the defense. This is becoming a blowout now; the extra point was good…barely. Patriots 33, Redskins 7

9:02- Seven-yard gain; 2nd & 3…

8:35- McCoy runs for 10; 1st & 10…

7:56- SACK! Collins with another sack and the Redskins now face 3rd & 17…

6:46- Five-yard gain makes it 4th & 12…

6:11- Loss of one by Michel; 2nd & 11…

5:33- Gain of four by Michel; 3rd & 7…

4:52- Incomplete pass and the Patriots will punt; 4th & 7…

4:44- Pass broken up by Roberts; 2nd & 10…

4:33- Gain of five on the run by Smallwood; 3rd & 5…

4:!5- Incomplete pass will force the Redskins to punt again. The Patriots offense will take over at their own six.

3:57- Bolden runs for a gain of one; 2nd & 9…

3:08- Bolden runs for three on 3rd & 7, so the Patriots will be forced to punt. The Redskins take over at their own 40. Patriots 33, Redskins 7

2:00- We have reached the two-minute warning, and this game is clearly decided.

:43- Belichick removes the headset and the Redskins will run it for the final play of the game. The Patriots use a strong second half to take down the Redskins by four touchdowns.
