Match of the Night: Roman Reigns, Shorty G & Ali def. King Corbin, Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro

This showcase main event was a solid back and forth affair. Coming out of the draft, some felt SmackDown was the weaker show in terms of in-ring studs. This match showcased six really talented members of the SmackDown roster, reassuring us that Friday nights will be fine in terms of match quality. Reigns’ hot tag was one of the best in recent memory, as he came in like a house on fire. Good work by the Big Dog.

Three Thoughts:

Cain & Brock Kept Apart

WWE promoted a “face-to-face” meeting for tonight’s SmackDown. At first, Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman refused to come out to meet Velasquez and Rey Mysterio in the ring. Instead Lesnar beat up Mysterio’s son Dominic. At this point, Dominic, stay home if Lesnar is advertised.

When Mysterio and Velasquez checked on Dominic, Lesnar then met them face-to-face. He blindsided the trio, and launched Mysterio into a wall with an F5. He took out all three men in a rapid attack. Check it out in full because I can not do it justice:

Braun Up Next?

Once Cain Velasquez and Brock Lesnar are done their Duel At The Jewel © , someone will need to be the next man up. These two established MMA tough guys will be hard to match up against a WWE superstar. The most realistic option may be Braun Strowman. Strowman has his own match against Tyson Fury on the show. If he goes over the boxer, Strowman could be seen as legitimate enough to knock off an MMA star.

On this show, Strowman got to beat up Drew Gulak after not liking his powerpoints. Drew deserves better.

Nikki Cross Is A Great Babyface

Cross got a win on the show over Mandy Rose while Bayley and Sasha Banks were on commentary. Bayley got over her heel character very well, acting aloof and distant and shooting Michael Cole some glares. Now that Bayley is heel, there is a gap on the roster for an earnest and honest babyface.

Enter Nikki Cross. She is endearing, enthusiastic, and fans genuinely want to see her succeed. While it is hard to get over without being explicitly “cool”, Cross has managed to do so so far. WWE would be smart to keep pushing her as their next big babyface.

Grade: C+

This show suffered from being a go-home show for the Saudi show, which some fans have no interest in watching. There was some quality wrestling, especially in the main event. Lesnar and Velasquez got some more heat for their rivalry, and the Intercontinental Championship has a new direction. Overall a few standout moments, but not a show that will be remembered for long.

One More Thing:

It looks like the next Intercontinental Championship feud is going to be Shinsuke Nakamura versus Daniel Bryan. The workhorse title getting two amazing technicians feuding over it? More, please.
