Wrestling Roundup: January 18, 2020

The Wrestling Roundup is here to bring you all the news and rumors you need to know in one place.

WWE SmackDown Results

Kane returned to SmackDown and WWE programming this Friday. Was he “The Big Red Machine” or just good ol’ Mayor Kane? We got the answer to that, as well as some quality matches in the latest episode of SmackDown. Analysis will be below, but first the results from January 17, 2020:

  • John Morrison def. Big E
  • The Usos def. The Revival
  • Lacey Evans def. Bayley
  • Alexa Bliss def. Sonya Deville
  • Roman Reigns def. Robert Roode in a Tables Match

WWE SmackDown Takeaways

We got Demon Kane! He was part of a trap to bring The Fiend down so Daniel Bryan could attack. I loved this segment, because it is layers of WWE remembering things. Wyatt remembered that his debut was against Kane in an Inferno Match. He remembered taking out Kane once before as The Fiend. Kane remembered The Fiend’s old tricks and was ready to draw him in. They continue to keep Bryan & Kane’s relationship as Team Hell No relevant. Lots of layers for a simple segment made it so effective. It also makes it look like Bryan can take Wyatt out, which is exciting.

Elias as a face will take some getting used to. There was a time early in 2019 when people were ready to cheer for Elias, but now it feels a little artificial. Braun Strowman saved him from a three-on-one beatdown, but are the established faces ready to take Elias in at his word? Having them be a little hesitant would make for great character layers.

Tale as old as time. Song as old as rhyme. Beauty and the beast… and Tucky! I’m fully invested in Mandy Rose & Otis after this week. Also, Sonya Deville is still underrated and hopefully will be used more if her and Mandy split during this storyline.

Kalisto Signs New Contract

One of WWE’s premier luchadors will be sticking around for a while. According to ProWrestlingSheet, Kalisto has re-signed with WWE on a multi-year deal. The 33-year-old has been on the main roster since 2015, and is a 2-time United States and 1-time Cruiserweight Champion in WWE. Lots left for the high-flyer to do in WWE, and it will be interesting to see where WWE chooses to use him in the future. Here’s a clip of that ridiculous Salida del Sol through a ladder he hit in 2015:
