Athleticism
Denzel Mims has an intriguing athletic profile considering his size. Ran a lot faster at the Combine than he looks on tape. Nothing special in the areas of quickness, agility, and change of direction, despite what his 3-Cone Combine time might seem to suggest. However, what his Combine performance said to me was that he trained specifically for the drills he would be doing. While that is a good thing, it’s important to remember that the tape doesn’t lie. Mims does not create much separation due to his limited agility and average route-running. Very difficult to bring down in the open field with just one man because of his size. He has the requisite speed to threaten down the field, but won’t take the top off a defense. However, considering his size, he has enough athleticism to be successful at the NFL level.

Hands
This is where he shines most on film. Exceptional at making catches away from his body and using his body to shield defenders and prevent them from making a play on the ball. Has a substantial catch radius that helped him make inaccurate throws seem on-target in college. He has impeccable body control while in the air, routinely contorting his body to make a difficult catch seem easy. One of the strongest in the class
Technique
Route running is average and he ran a limited route tree at Baylor. Occasionally will telegraph his breaks, making it easy for the defender to jump his route. Remarkably adept at hand fighting and using his length to hold off defenders when at the catch point. Subtly creates additional separation with arm-bars on deep routes. He might be the best blocking WR in this year’s class, and his effort is off the charts good. Work ethic is notoriously high (as evidenced by his Combine performance). Uses his frame to his advantage whenever he can.
Why Mims for the Packers?
Mims isn’t explosive on the same level as guys like Ruggs, Hamler, Shenault, or Reagor, but he uses his large frame to his advantage consistently. Has great technique at the catch point and phenomenal body control. He has some of the best hands in the class and a high work ethic. He has all the tools and traits required to become a consistent presence on the boundary in the NFL. The Packers are still searching for a reliable WR2, and while Mims won’t be a truly dynamic threat after the catch or consistently take the top off defenses, he has the tools to be a reliable target at all levels of the field.
