On day three of the NFL Draft, Green Bay did not pick until late in the fifth round. With that selection, the defensive side of the football was addressed and Kamal Martin was the choice. The newest Packer, was a linebacker at Minnesota. Martin stays north as he comes to the NFC North to compete for a spot in a relatively open depth chart behind Christian Kirksey.

Mike Pettine prioritizes coverage skills from his linebackers. Martin is adequate in that regard. Furthermore, he was never a tackling machine until his senior season, when he accumulated 66 tackles in only 8 games. At this points, Martin is likely closer to a project than a starter. He needs to develop the mental aspect of his game to consistently compete at the NFL level. This pick fills a position of need but not with an overwhelming talent and scheme fit.
