With the 125th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select…
Name: James Morgan
School: Florida International University
James Morgan is a quarterback with a lot of experience under his belt. Morgan spent three years at Bowling Green, playing in two seasons. From there he transferred to Florida International to start his final two seasons. In his career, Morgan tossed for 8,654 yards and 65 touchdowns, but he was much more productive in his two years at FIU. At FIU he threw for 40 of his touchdowns and 5,312 of those yards. Morgan has a powerful arm and is not afraid to make any throws. He’s credited for his ability to work through all of his progressions and has the ability to use his legs to pick up first downs. Morgan is a 2x All-Conference USA recipient and was selected for the 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl.
Insurance for Darnold
Last season, Sam Darnold was hit with mononucleosis (Mono) and missed three games. In those three games, the Jets were outscored 84-23, but 14 of those points were scored on defense. The Jets offense was non-existent in the absence of Darnold, so the pick of Morgan is to provide insurance. Across the NFL, a number of backup quarterbacks were looked upon to step up, and they did. When Sam went down, quarterbacks Trevor Siemian and Luke Fulk didn’t even give the team a chance. With this pick, Gang Green grabs a guy they feel can be molded into a sustainable replacement if called upon. Morgan has some mechanical issues to clean up, but the team will have time to work through those issues.
Gang Green’s Remaining Needs
James Morgan is a nice depth piece for the team, but there are still more holes to fill. The team needs help in the interior line. The Jets added some pieces in free agency and addressed the tackle position with Mekhi Becton. Another guard or center with the remaining picks is vital. The Jets also need to address the wide receiver position, however, they did a nice job with Denzel Mims in the second round. The team needs to also address a corner on Day three. Ashyton Davis was a nice boost to the secondary, but they need a player who can cover on the outside.
