The Wrestling Roundup is here to bring you all the news and rumors you need to know in one place.
WWE NXT Results
This week’s NXT had lots of action. The NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament had a triple threat to crown another finalist. Charlotte Flair got a mystery partner to take on Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley. Finally, Timothy Thatcher and Matt Riddle brawled in a fight pit cage match. Who came out on top in all of these? Here are the results:
- Drake Maverick def. Jake Atlas and KUSHIDA to earn a spot in the NXT Interim Cruiserweight Championship Finals
- Johnny Gargano def. Adrian Alanis
- Raquel Gonzalez def. Shotzi Blackheart
- Charlotte Flair & Chelsea Green def. Io Shirai & Rhea Ripley
- Tomasso Ciampa def. Leon Ruff
- Timothy Thatcher def. Matt Riddle in a fight pit match
Riddle and Thatcher had an absolute banger of a fight pit match with Kurt Angle as the referee. The match had a unique feel, with a scaffold around the top of the cage and the only ways to win being submission or knock out. It appears as Riddle is on his way to the main roster after putting over Thatcher big. Riddle will be very fun to watch on SmackDown, and Thatcher can now become a dangerous player in NXT’s singles division.
The NXT In Your House card continues to fill up. William Regal made the match of Adam Cole versus Velveteen Dream for the NXT Championship. If Dream loses, he can no longer challenge Cole for the title. This is the fifth match on the NXT TakeOver card already, and some other feuds may still find their way onto the show.
Drake Maverick survives, and has a shot at the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. The story of Maverick continuing to fight for his spot in NXT/WWE has really pulled at the heartstrings. If he loses, it will be devastating for fans of his work. Should he win, it will call into question some of the releases WWE made in terms of what was potentially a work. All I know is that Maverick versus El Hijo del Fantasma should be an excellent finals.
AEW Dynamite Results
It was the fallout episode of Dynamite after Double or Nothing, which means lots of new directions. A number one contenders battle royale for a shot at the TNT Championship was on the card. What other storylines would emerge for AEW? Here are the full results:
- Matt Hardy & Young Bucks def. Private Party & Joey Janela
- Brian Cage def. Lee Johnson
- Hikaru Shida def. Christi Jaynes
- Jimmy Havoc & Kip Sabian def. SCU
- Jungle Boy wins the TNT Championship Number One Contenders battle royal
Sound the alarm! FTR is here! After the opening match, Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler (known as the Revival in WWE) arrived in a pickup truck. They came to the ring and took out Butcher & The Blade, who were beating up on the Young Bucks. The confrontation between FTR & The Young Bucks was teased, and now we can finally look forward to these teams squaring off. This is going to be good.
In even more insane news, Mike Tyson and Chris Jericho got in a pull apart brawl at the end of the show. Tyson appeared at the Inner Circle pep rally with Henry Cejudo, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belofrt and others. Jericho still remembered a punch from Tyson a decade ago. Once Tyson stepped into his face and flexed, it was on. Is this leading to a match between Jericho and Tyson? I hope so. That’s the kind of weird stuff you couldn’t have predicted at the beginning of 2020, but here we are.
Britt Baker was supposed to update us on her injury status. Instead, she cut a great promo from a wheelchair about the rest of the AEW Women’s Division and a conspiracy theory to injure her. AEW wants to keep the heat on the Role Model, and she’ll return by AEW All Out in early September. When she does, I forsee the AEW Women’s Championship around her waist quickly.
Deonna Purrazzo Going To Impact Wrestling
The Virtuosa is returning to Impact Wrestling. In a promo that aired Tuesday night, Deonna Purrazzo announced her return to Impact (h/t WrestlingInc). Purrazzo had been released by WWE in April during their wave of cuts related to the ongoing pandemic. She has previously worked for Impact between 2014 & 2017.

One for the Road:
The TNT Championship has a new number one contender: Jungle Boy! He outlasted the others in the battle royale and will challenge Cody next week. Cody announced that he’ll be defending the title every week in an open challenge, so it’ll be the first of many defenses.
