Earlier this afternoon, we received word from Adam Schefter that Browns tight end David Njoku has requested a trade.
“Browns’ TE David Njoku and his agent Drew Rosenhaus asked today for the team to trade him. The Browns told Njoku they would like to keep him, but Rosenhaus told them he’s intent on a trade. They want a trade before training camp” -Adam Schefter via Twitter
Njoku’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus of Rosenhaus Sports, said “It is in David’s best interest to find a new team at this time.” Let’s take a look at some teams that might be interested in trading for the University of Miami product.
The Dallas Cowboys have already emerged as a potential landing spot for the young tight end. The Cowboys have had quite a few great tight ends in their storied history, players such as Jason Witten, Jay Novacek and Pettis Norman. Njoku would be an instant upgrade over Blake Jarwin.
The Houston Texans have struggled at the tight end position since they lost Owen Daniels in 2014. It appeared as if they had found his successor in C.J. Fiedorowicz but his career never managed to take off. The addition of Njoku would create a nice tandem with Darren Fells and give Deshaun Watson a weapon to try and replace DeAndre Hopkins.
New York Jets
The J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets could look to trade for Njoku to pair alongside his college teammate, Chris Herndon. The Jets made a couple moves this offseason such as drafting Denzel Mims, Lawrence Cager and Lamical Perine, and signing Breshad Perriman and Frank Gore. Adding Njoku would contribute to their efforts to develop Sam Darnold and turn him into a quality starting quarterback.
The Carolina Panthers saw a steady decrease in the production of Greg Olsen during the last couple years and have hit the hard reset on the franchise. They locked up Christian McCaffrey for the long term, brought in Teddy Bridgewater and Robby Anderson, and have a new coaching staff running the show. We saw Matt Rhule’s offensive mind go to work this past season at Baylor, getting Njoku would take some pressure off Christian McCaffrey and could help Bridgewater adjust quickly.
The Washington Redskins are a very young team. Jeremy Sprinkle is a serviceable option at tight end but bringing in Njoku could do wonders for Dwayne Haskins’ career. Ron Rivera heavily incorporated his tight ends into the game plan while in Carolina and would absolutely love having David Njoku.
Now there are plenty of other teams that aren’t included here that could make offers. Looking at the Patriots, Bears, Cardinals and Jaguars mainly. The Browns have expressed that they wish to keep Njoku on the roster but Rosenhaus is the man that got Duke Johnson out of Cleveland so don’t be surprised if he’s gone sooner rather than later.
