The NFL MVP Race Has Come Down to a Pair of Transcendent Quarterbacks

The 2020 NFL MVP race is between two transcendent quarterbacks who can lay claim to being the most gifted throwers of the football in league history. This is Marlon Brando versus Daniel-Day Lewis for the title of the greatest actor ever.

Before you “@ me”, Tom Brady is, no doubt, the GOAT, but this race and discussion is about pure talent and the “wow” factor and is focused solely on this season.

Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes are both playing their position at an intergalactic level.

The Packers (10-3) and Chiefs (12-1) are currently the number one seed in their respective conferences. So, Rodgers and Mahomes have turned their brilliant play into wins.

Statistically, Rodgers holds a comfortable edge as we head to the final three regular season games.

Rodgers has had exactly one game this season with a sub 100 passer rating. Mahomes has had four such games.

Each Quarterback is throwing to an elite wide receiver in Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill. Mahomes has more explosive weapons than Rodgers and is also in his 4th season in Andy Reid’s system while Rodgers is in just his 2nd year in Matt LaFleur’s.

The Packers defense is 17th in points allowed and 8th in yards permitted. The Chiefs defense is 8th best in points allowed and 17th in yards. This anomaly is because the Packers Special Teams are ranked in the league’s bottom five while the Chiefs are top five.

Despite this lack of support, the Packers have actually outscored the Chiefs 410-403.

While Titans’ running back Derrick Henry, Bills quarterback Josh Allen, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Rams Defensive Lineman Aaron Donald have all had MVP caliber seasons, none have played at the sublime levels like Rodgers and Mahomes.

And in the Rodgers-Mahomes debate, the older guy has outperformed his younger State Farm co-star. How delicious would it be if they were to meet on the field on February, 7th in Tampa, site of Super Bowl LV?
