Dear Drew,
In 2006 Hurricane Katrina made its way to New Orleans and ravaged the city and the entire gulf region. While I personally wasn’t a victim of the hurricane, I knew plenty of people and close friends that were greatly affected by this disaster. I forever support and feel the pain that these great people went through. Fast forward to the 2006 offseason we just signed the little known Chargers quarterback Drew Brees to a five-year $60 million deal. At the time, all we knew was he had to be better than the Aaron Brooks era and much like our city he also had hit some adversity, suffering what many considered a career ending shoulder injury. We all thought hey you know what the hell let’s just see what happens. When the team and its city were at the lowest you could possibly be, the only way to go is up. Little did we know it would change immensely for the best and just how much our lives as well as yours would change and be impacted.
Multiple playoff victories, numerous NFL records , great quarterback play (seriously we’ve been spoiled) and even a super bowl victory against Peyton Manning, you can’t write this stuff up! Seriously, you’ve given us so much joy and happiness over the years even when the teams weren’t all that good, we still watched because of you. Ask any Saints fan, and they’ll take it to their grave, that you are the best quarterback in NFL history. Also, ask any Saints fan and no athlete has ever meant so much or been so connected to a city like you have, Drew. All the charity work you and your family have done for this city. New Orleans wouldn’t have recovered the way it did without you. I think I speak for everyone when I say that you will go down as the all time best Saint and person we’ve ever seen in the black and gold.
Before writing this I went one twitter and got some quotes from Saints fans to give you just an idea on how much you mean to us.
@lukbutl: “Drew is the only quarterback for the Saints I can truly remeber, what a blessing. I’m going to miss him.”
@maxoc12: “Brady might be the goat because rings but Brees is the best to ever spin it.”
@coledenheckmann: “As much as it hurts to know that this is likely his last run, I can’t help but think about how much he has done for the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. He has spoiled us Saints fans for the past 15 years and o loved every bit of it I remember watching us beat the Colts in the Super Bowl and other than the Tracy Porter pick 6, Drew and Sean holding that trophy up high, and the parade in New Orleans after, my favorite memory was how my whole neighborhood all ran outside immediately as the game ended and everyone was shouting in joy and shooting fireworks because we were just overwhelmed with emotions. All thanks to Drew Brees.”
@CBelyeu: “Being a Saints fan before Drew Brees meant getting excited about a 7-9 season, after Drew’s arrival meant we could compete most years for a playoff spot and even yanked in a Superbowl that was never expected to happen in the Big Easy. If i could say one thing to him it would be thank you helping a city rise up (since ATL cant) on and off the field. I had plenty of family affected by Hurricane Katrina so it meant a lot to see him help rebuild.”
@ThatBoyKlink: “Drew Brees took an entire franchise and in the process saved a whole city.”
If this is really it, Mr. Brees, it’s been a hell of a ride! We’ll miss you for sure! Let’s go get this ring and again from myself and all of WhoDatNation, we love you, thank you, and most importantly Who Dat!
