The longest-tenured Buccaneer will remain the longest-tenured Buccaneer in 2021.
As reported earlier by Ian Rapoport, the Bucs and linebacker Lavonte David have agreed on a two-year, $25 million extension with $20 million guaranteed. The best part? In 2021, David counts just $3.5 million against the cap because the team added three voidable years to the end of the contract as Mike Garafolo reported.
It’ll be a five-year deal with three voidable years for LB Lavonte David that keeps his cap number at a manageable $3.5 million for the #Buccaneers this year. Voidable years are all the rage this year as teams maneuver around the cap decrease.

Drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft, David had never participated in the playoffs prior to the Bucs Super Bowl run this past year. However, that doesn’t diminish how good of a player he has been for almost a decade. Since entering the league, David has amassed 1,125 total tackles, 24 sacks, 12 interceptions, and three defensive touchdowns. In addition to a Super Bowl win, David is also a one-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro in 2013.

The move comes just hours after the team announced they used the franchise tag on wide receiver, Chris Godwin. So far, a week before the start of the league year and free agency, the Bucs have locked up two of their key free agents as they attempt to become the first team to win back-to-back championships in almost two decades. In addition, thanks to the creative structure of David’s deal and the highly anticipated Brady extension, the Bucs have a bit more money to work with as they still have decisions to make on guys like Shaquill Barrett, Rob Gronkowski, Ndamukong Suh, and Antonio Brown.
