2021 Packers Prospect Profile: Christian Barmore
Name: Christian Barmore
Position: DL
School: Alabama
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 315 lbs.
Athletic Ability
Christian Barmore is known for his brute strength. Even more noteworthy is that he is a plus athlete at his impressive size. Barmore has some speed-to-power explosion to his game and is a fluid mover. With his quickness, he beats blockers to the point of attack and has the lateral mobility to work down the line to plug holes and cut off running lanes. Light on his feet and flexible, Barmore can bend to get under offensive linemen to win his battle. The toolbox is full of physical gifts.
NFL Ready
Defensive linemen normally take time to translate to the pro game. The speed, power, and technical aspects are a huge jump-up. The first two obstacles won’t be a problem for Barmore. A powerhouse on the hoof he is a brute in the trenches and overpowers offensive lineman. Good luck keeping a hat on him because Barmore’s best trait is he doesn’t stay blocked. He uses his strong hands and extension to control would-be blockers. Barmore has the short jab to jolt opponents and keep them off his body. He constantly works to get to the ball whether it’s walking an opponent back or shedding and attacking. It is really impressive seeing this bully work. With some fine-tuning and good coaching, he can be a factor from day one.
Versatility
Barmore mostly played 3-technique in college and worked against guards. That’s not to say he is incapable of lining up over the center or play a 5-technique. In college, he wasn’t asked to play multiple roles, something he may need to do in Green Bay’s base defense. It could take some time for Barmore to learn different concepts, but because of his impressive ability, he will still appeal to both odd and even defensive fronts.

Football IQ
Barmore understands blocking concepts and how to attack double-teams. However, even with his impressive build, he wasn’t always a full-time starter. The lack of consistent playing time could hinder his ability to understand different tasks asked of him. At times, Barmore takes himself out of plays because of over-pursuing or being fooled by the play call. Again, this comes back to coaching, and the staff under Joe Barry will attempt to do their best to prepare their players. But mostly, Barmore needs to live through the practice and game reps in order for his IQ to develop.
Pass Rush
A major plus for interior defenders is what they can bring to the pass rush. It is nice to have the run stuffers, but having a 3-down guy who is good against the pass is a huge benefit. Barmore checks all the boxes. He will be a guy that can collapse the pocket up the middle. His ability to disengage and get off blocks will be a problem for offenses. With a motor that runs hot off the snap, this could be a perennial 6 to 8 sack defensive lineman.
Why Barmore for the Packers?
Green Bay has had a need for another imposing defensive tackle and someone who can take the pressure off of Kenny Clark. With Barmore’s power and plus athletic ability, he can be an instant problem for opposing offenses. Big men that can push the pocket up the middle and get off blocks don’t grow on trees. These guys keep linebackers free and let edge rushers eat. Having one of these players is good but having two is field tilting. With Clark locked up long-term and Kingsley Keke flashing, adding Barmore, give would the Packers a three-headed monster in the trenches for years to come. Baramore is just scratching the surface of his potential. Imagine if he hits on his athletic ceiling.
