Stills Could Benefit Raiders Long Term

When you quickly scan the 2021 draft class, at certain levels, the Las Vegas Raiders found a few hidden gems. Now, the draft contains more than the selected picks. The undrafted free agents that will populate the roster and probably, the practice squad should actually raise eyebrows. Not to mention, the team could see one of the UDFA ascend to the roster and could see snaps during the 2021 season, Darius Stills’ name may not jump off the page, but the Raiders could finally employ a developmental tackle.

Lower Expectations

Stills’ entry into the league provides the Raiders a plus. First, his UDFA status affords them a player at a reduced salary. Next, they don’t expect him to start. In reality, working into a rotation, fighting for a spot through camp will show the team what the former Mountaineer can actually accomplish. Lastly, look at who the Raiders actually drafted at tackle in recent years. Eddie Vanderdoes fought injury in less than effective play. Jihad Ward couldn’t find the backfield with a GPS. PJ Hall failed to capitalize on his extensive measurables and ability. Granted, Maurice Hurst did provide the team a spark, but the team released him. Under those circumstances, anything that Stills could provide would be a marked improvement from past draft failures.

Skillset

Standing six-foot-one and weighing 285 pounds, Stills relies on burst and agility. He moves well off the snap, beating the guard with footwork and leverage. With good lower flexibility, Stills shows the knack for keeping low, prohibiting the blocker from a full target to latch onto. Additionally, he displays the lateral agility to excel with twists and stunts, giving offensive yet another wrinkle and ultimately a headache. Questions exist why he fell into the ranks of the UDFA.

Reality

In all honesty, the Raiders could cut Darius Stills during camp. If he doesn’t stick, they don’t lose anything. It’s the cold nature of camp. However, if Stills excels in-game, opening eyes and making plays, you could see the Raiders keeping him either on the roster or practice squad. Truthfully, they signed a few defensive tackles to one-year deals. Veterans that either maxed out on talent or playing through a last prove-it deal. Behind them, a defense that needs to keep trending younger and athletic on the interior would go a long way into helping Stills. The NFL continues to trend towards the athlete.
