After so many years with so many different stories coming out from many different perspectives about the Chicago Bulls dynasty in the 1990s – one of the main cogs of each three-peat is finally ready to share his point of view.
The recent announcement by Scottie Pippen about this memoir sent shockwaves through the NBA with just a few released excerpts from the book.
These first couple of previews from the book have already set a tone for what the final product should be once it is released in November. In case you didn’t already know how Pippen felt about “The Last Dance” documentary, you get a taste of his disdain in the description of the book on the Simon & Schuster official website.
Simply put, without Pippen, there are no championship banners—let alone six—hanging from the United Center rafters. There’s no Last Dance documentary. There’s no “Michael Jordan” as we know him. The 1990s Chicago Bulls teams would not exist as we know them.
It feels like Pippen is getting 30 plus years’ worth of stress, anguish, and anxiety off his chest in this book. There must be a prop bet somewhere on what percentage of the book is aimed toward Michael Jordan. Though Jordan isn’t the only one Pippen goes after in the book.
In Unguarded, the soft-spoken, six-time champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist finally opens up to offer pointed and transparent takes on Michael Jordan, Phil Jackson, and Isiah Thomas, among others.
Just in case you are wondering about Isiah [Thomas] and what Pippen could have to say about Thomas in the book. I won’t spoil it for you, but let’s just say these Hall of Famers have never been on one another’s Christmas card list at any point in time. That part of the book won’t be for the faint of heart. Reading what Pippen has to say about his former coach Phil Jackson will be interesting to see as well. For as much winning as those Bulls teams did, the relationship between Pippen and Jackson wasn’t always perfect.

One of the most intriguing sections of the book will be Pippen’s response to being labeled as Jordan’s “sidekick” for obvious reasons. While the term sidekick does not have to take on a negative connotation. In the world of sports, and especially in the NBA, it can take on a whole new meaning.
Pippen details how he cringed at being labeled Jordan’s sidekick, and discusses how he could have (and should have) received more respect from the Bulls’ management and the media.

IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER
Having a career that has spanned over 30 years and counting between his [Pippen] time in the NBA and sports media, there should be no shortage of anecdotes to fill the pages of this book. One story that many hardcore Bulls fans [especially] will no doubt be looking forward to is Pippen’s perspective on the playoff game in 1994 against the New York Knicks. This is the game that Pippen pulled himself from in protest of the final play of the game being called for Tony Kukoc instead of him.
Another good story that should be covered in the book will be on the Bulls rivalry with the bad boy Detroit Pistons of the late 80s. The final failure for the Bulls in that saga in what is now known as the ‘migraine game’ during game 7 of the eastern conference finals, where the Bulls ran into their final roadblock before their dynasty kicked off that very next season. Anyone who was around at the time, or watched “The Last Dance” documentary, knows of the uphill battle the young Bulls team faced from about 1988-90 before finally conquering the mighty Pistons in 1991.
So, expect this one to be a day one best seller without a doubt. Hopefully, Pippen has found some kind of satisfaction in writing his memoir. Having used this experience as a therapeutic and cathartic way of dealing with the disdain and angst he has been holding for such a long time.
