The Mid-Summer Classic is coming on Tuesday, July 12th at Coors Field in Colorado. Without further delay, here are the NL starters.
C – Buster Posey – Giants
1B – Freddie Freeman – Braves
2B – Adam Frazier – Pirates
SS – Fernando Tatis Jr. – Padres
3B – Nolan Arenado – Cardinals
OF – Ronald Acuna Jr. – Braves
OF – Nick Castellanos – Reds
OF – Jesse Winker – Reds
Great American Ballparks dimensions (you can link my previous column mentioning that) helped those Reds players get in. All the rest make sense and it’s a decent group. The fact that Bryce Harper (6 %) and Juan Soto (6%) shows the dissatisfaction their fan bases have with their teams more than the players. Although there is some talk in Philadelphia that Harper may not be worth the contract. Phillies fans have until 2031 to continue to debate that topic.
The best pitcher in baseball is Jacob deGrom (7-2, .095 ERA, 136 Ks) and there’s a chance he could miss the game. The talk is it will depend on how the Mets set their rotation and then we will have a better idea. deGrom will be selected and that will be his fourth in eight seasons. If the Mets ace pitches the Sunday before the big game, he’s not going to pitch, and you can’t blame him. deGrom probably still goes to get announced though. That might still happen. I would think former deGrom teammate, and current Phillies ace, Zack Wheeler will be selected (6-4, 2.05 ERA, 4th in the NL, 139 Ks).

Let’s Get Jim Gosger His Ring
Jim Gosger played in 10 games for the 1969 Mets and parts of two seasons with the Mets in 1973 and 1974. I have only fuzzy memories of him, but the Mets shouldn’t and the last time the Mets got the 1969 Mets together, for the 50th anniversary, I was there, and they posted on the jumbotron that they remember Jim. That’s nice if they said it in the right context but unfortunately, they thought he was no longer on this earth and therefore not invited to the game.
Gosger has never been invited to any reunions. He was a September call-up in 1969 and never played in the postseason. But he was a Miracle Met. In 1969, the Mets gave all their employees rings and Gosger got a $100 check. In the end, Steven Cohen can make this right. Why not? He can right a wrong that’s been going on far too long and “Goose” would feel the joy. He was a part of their run, and he shouldn’t have to buy his own ring, which I get why he didn’t want to do that.
