Jets fans can finally breath now. After a contract standoff that seemed to have no end, both the New York Jets and Zach Wilson have agreed to terms.
Zach Wilson and the New York Jets finally agreed to terms early afternoon on July 29th, 2021. The deal is ultimately worth $35.1 million dollars, with a $22.9 million signing bonus, per Adam Schefter. Zach Wilson gets his money up front, and the New York Jets maintain their offset language in the contract. Wilson was the finally draft pick who needed to be signed, and according to head coach Robert Saleh, the only person absent from the start of camp. Two days into camp, the Jets finally inked their second-overall pick, and maintain some level of security. One party gets paid, one party is protected in the event Wilson isn’t on the roster before his contract expires.
Two days too late, but now the team can get to work. And thank goodness for that. Without Zach Wilson on the team, the Jets quarterbacks these past two days have been James Morgan and Mike White. Neither of them have ever attempted a pass in an NFL game before.
Jets Camp Notes
Quarterback Room Cause For Concern
The quarterback depth is terrible. As Jets fans, we all live in an eternal state of concern in regards to quarterback health. Sam Darnold, the Jets previous quarterback, never played a full 16-game season. At least then they had the likes of Josh McCown and Joe Flacco to fall back on. It was reported in camp that between the two quarterbacks, Morgan and White, their play has been subpar. Late reads to wide open receivers, straight up misses, etcetera. Of all the passes on one day of camp, the only pass that went further than 10 yards was intercepted.
The Jets are expected to bring in some additional quarterbacks for workouts. Without Zach Wilson, I currently have zero confidence in that room.
Rookie Michael Carter Running Away with RB1 Roll
Michael Carter is currently taking the majority of starting reps at running back. Despite a crowded room and what was expected to be a running back-by-committee position, Carter is currently running away with the starting job. This is after Tevin Coleman, one of the free agent signings, is taking his first snaps after missing almost all of last season. There has been little word on surprising fan favorites Ty Johnson and La’Mical Perine.

Carl Lawson and Big Ticket Becton Battling It Out
Tuesday, (7/29/2021), Jets premiere free agent signing Carl Lawson recorded two sacks during team period, as well as a few more pressures. He’s been putting work against Mekhi Becton, the teams franchise left tackle. It’s good for Lawson to be getting quality successful reps against the #1 fan voted left tackle from the 2020 Pro Bowl, and it’s good for Becton to be getting worked by a well-developed pass rusher. Iron sharpens iron.
Where In The World Are The Wideouts?
Starting wide receivers for the camp included Jamison Crowder, Corey Davis, and Keelan Cole. Second-round draft pick Elijah Moore, after having a ridiculous OTA period, runs second team with Berrios and Mims. And while not wide receiver related, in other pass catching news it seems free agent Tyler Kroft has outworked incumbent Chris Herndon for the TE1 roll. Herndon is currently on thin ice after a very unproductive season. Mims still needs to prove he can be a teams WR1 or WR2 like many fans would like.
Injuries Already?
Defensive end Vinny Curry and safety Ashtyn Davis have been informed they will not be playing until at least Week 2 of the season due to injury. This is crushing for Davis, a third-round pick from the 2020 Draft, who has had some very inconsistent play for the Jets. One of the best tackles, and one of the worst coverage players per PFF last year, Davis needs to develop and time lost to injury is time he cannot afford. As of today, it seems Marcus Maye starts along side Lamarcus Joyner, a free agent acquisition.
