BREAKING: Keep the Twists Coming - Miami, Xavien Howard Agree to New Deal -

The Miami Dolphins and their star veteran cornerback Xavien Howard agreed to a restructured contract in the overnight hours between Friday and Saturday, per multiple sources.

New deal includes up to $3.5M in incentives in '21 & guaranteed '21 salary. Also includes '22 guaranteed salary, even for injury. Howard also gets $6.775M in '22 salary due at signing, per multiple sources.

Howard, the Dolphins’ No. 1 CB, and currently one of the best CBs in the NFL, threatened a trade and hadn’t reported to all team activities thus far in the new league season despite being unhappy with his current deal.

But all that has now changed.

Let’s Break it Down

Miami and Howard have re-worked to give the CB $3.5 million dollars in incentives in 2021 and his fully guaranteed salary. Howard will earn a base salary of just over $12 million dollars, plus the incentivized new addition.

Additionally, the Dolphins have agreed to convert the $93,000 Howard accumulated in fines into guaranteed money for injury. Which is something Howard has dealt with, and missed time for, in his career. Marking one of the reasons the Dolphins were hesitant to again re-work a contract that still had four years remaining on it.

Nevertheless, Miami has also converted $600,000 of Howard’s 2022 workout cash into bonuses.

Miami Alleviates Previous Incurred Fines, Per Cameron Wolfe

Former ESPN Miami Dolphins beat reporter Cameron Wolfe details the $93,000 was for missed Dolphins minicamp this season and the $600,000 will be based on workout, per game basis.

Dolphins also rescinded Xavien Howard’s 93K in fines for skipping minicamp and converted 600K of 2022 workout/per game roster bonuses into salary gtd for injury, source says.

Howard Previously Requested Trade in Late July

Howard originally requested a trade from the Dolphins on July 27, taking to Instagram to voice his frustrations.

He reported to training camp, but said he only did so to avoid more fines.

Howard also said he felt he should be the highest paid CB on his own team, which until this restructure, was CB Byron Jones. Howard forced more turnovers and was ultimately more of a factor on the field than Jones and he wanted to be compensated for it.

Miami’s No. 1 CB will Suit Up in the Orange and Teal in 2021

Howard was the first CB to reach double-digit interceptions (10) since Antonio Cromartie in 2007.

Howard has 22 career INTs and 191 tackles (148 solo). He’ll now be able to add to that total in a Dolphins uniform.
