After the embarrassing loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 3, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy tries to say the right thing. Instead, he keeps digging a deeper hole for himself.
The fallout from the Chicago Bears humiliating loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 3 continues. Head coach Matt Nagy deservedly received a lot of bashing on social media and television from not only fans but also analysts and former players. Nagy had a horrible game plan and failed to make adjustments when things weren’t working.
The Bears finished the game with 47 total yards of offense. Of that paltry number, only one yard came from passing. The Browns sacked Justin Fields nine times for a total of 67 yards. Of their 11 drives, six of them ended with negative yards. They were just 1-for-11 on third downs. I could keep going but it’s just too depressing.
After the game, Nagy tried to take some responsibility to stem all the criticism he knew was coming his way. This is what he said in his postgame press conference.
I obviously as a head coach did not do a good enough job of getting this offense ready. … It starts with me. It ends with me.
His words didn’t work, however. The hits came fast and furious.
.@danorlovsky7 and Rex Ryan absolutely unleashed on the Bears’ head coach ????
“The Chicago Bears should fire Matt Nagy today. Because yesterday’s game plan, which was the worst one I’ve ever seen in my life, was either negligence or intentional!” pic.twitter.com/SnWhQjNYme

.@olin_kreutz knows how Nagy can find the why ???????????? pic.twitter.com/XPJ5B2sbyR
— Bears Talk (@NBCSBears) September 26, 2021
In addition to his comment above, Chicago Bears legend Olin Kreutz also said that after a while of trying to say the right things, the players will tune him out if there is no adjustment made. Nagy preaches about fixing the offense. He preaches about using the running game and tight ends. However, the same things continue to happen. The offense continually ranks at or near the bottom in nearly every category, while the running backs and tight ends keep wondering when they’ll see action. It’s been this way for the 3+ seasons he’s been head coach in Chicago.

Nagy keeps digging a hole for himself
In his Monday morning press conference, Nagy again tried to contain the rising tide of negativity. Again, however, it didn’t work. He kept bringing up a supposed hand injury that Fields suffered in the game. He brought it up first in the postgame press conference then again on Monday.
When reporters asked Fields about it, he said he had x-rays on the hand. The test was negative. He went on to say that the hand felt fine.
Nagy used that as an excuse to consider benching Fields, though. In his press conference, he said that all three quarterbacks, Fields, Andy Dalton, and Nick Foles are in consideration to start Week 4 against the Detroit Lions. Of course, that isn’t sitting well with Chicago Bears Nation. Yes, many people feel concerned about Fields’ development under Nagy. However, the best way for him to get better and develop quicker is to play.
Nagy’s words and actions are very peculiar and frustrating. He looks for any excuse to keep Fields from playing. Furthermore, he prepares an awful game plan that a youth football coach would laugh at, and some people wonder aloud if he’s intentionally sabotaging FIelds. Normally, entertaining such thoughts is crazy, but it’s understandable how people could feel that way. In fact, looking at the sideline during the game, Dalton and Foles were spotted talking with FIelds. Do you know who wasn’t talking to him? His head coach.
Now Nagy goes out and says there will be an open competition for the upcoming game. Why he continually acts as if FIelds is a weak-minded, untalented prospect is beyond reason. Despite people saying that Fields was his type of quarterback, I wonder if Nagy really didn’t want Fields on his roster. It sure seems that way.
