Patriots Release CB Stephon Gilmore

In a stunning move to begin Wednesday, the New England Patriots have released cornerback Stephon Gilmore after four seasons with the team. Currently on the PUP list, Gilmore will be eligible to return after Week 6 for whichever team signs the two-time All-Pro.

Gilmore released a statement early Wednesday on social media confirming the news.

“It is with mixed emotions that I announce my goodbye to this great fan base. We enjoyed so much success together and you have been an incredible inspiration for my individual achievements. Thank you for supporting this Rock Hill kid and allowing him to achieve his NFL dreams.”

Gilmore continued to thank members of the organization.

“To Mr. Kraft, the coaches, and the organization thank you for providing me with this platform and allowing me to be part of greatness. Most of all I want to thank my teammates who lined up next to me every Sunday with one goal in mind. Those moments on and off the field will never be forgotten.”

Originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 draft, Gilmore signed a five-year, $65 million deal prior to the 2017 season with the Patriots. During his time in New England, he was a three-time Pro Bowler, a two-time All-Pro, and a crucial member of two trips to the Super Bowl, including the 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in 2018.

The Patriots and Gilmore had been working on a restructuring of his contract during his time away from the team however, to this point, no progress has been made and the 31-year-old is now a free agent with, likely, a fairly robust market in front of him.

For the team, J.C. Jackson is now officially their top corner and due a contract of his own when the season is over. Whether the two situations are related remains to be seen but for now, we know the team is moving on from the latest number 24 to don the Patriots uniform.
